Enjoying Life Part II

Over 13,000 people view the introduction this way each month and find it to be a helpful beginning.

Luke 18:36-38

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice “of the truth,” the ability to recognize Jesus as God’s Son, the Second Person of the Trinity, our Messiah).

Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

At times Jesus’ words make no sense to a casual reader. To understand Him, one must understand His reason for coming. Without that as the basis, His words can become confusing. He came to bare witness to the Truth. As in Pilates day, so is Truth today. It’s a moving target if you reject Jesus’s words, who spoke the Truth because He spoke of Himself. There is no truth regarding Life, our purpose in Life, and the future of our life apart from Him. Pilate’s words “What is truth” points to his emptiness, a war-hardened man whose “Truth” was his sword. Rome had conquered many nations and the gods of those nations, so much for their gods and their truth.

Yet he would learn through some painful and soul-searching experiences with Christ that Truth is not the sword but the peaceful person of Christ. Christ was unlike any man he had ever questioned or met. Would he later regret killing an innocent man when he had the power to free Him? He feared the Jew’s report to Caesar; therefore, who he really cared about was himself and his position, not the innocent man standing before him. Christ was and is a King from another world that Pilate’s heart was blind to even though his wife said to him “that she had suffered much in a dream and that he was to have nothing to do with that innocent man (Matt.27:19).” Would he come to understand this after Christ’s resurrection? The centurion who oversaw the Crucifixion came to believe.

Why would Jesus answer Pilate, “Thou sayest that I am a king”? Pilate never said Jesus was a King; Pilate asked if He was. Yet behind Pilate’s questioning of Jesus was the concern that Jesus might be a threat to Rome since he had such a large following. When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, Nicodemus knew Jesus came from God because of His miracles, but he never asked Jesus about salvation; being a Jew, he assumed he had it. However, Jesus knowing that Nicodemus was blind to the Truth of Salvation, spoke to him, saying that he needed to be born again.

At times Jesus’s comments do not make sense. They do not follow the dialogue that is occurring. Yet Jesus, by speaking as such, creates the dialogue that needs to occur. He did it with Pilate and with Nicodemus. God allows situations to occur, sometimes very painful, so that we press into Him and ask hard questions that make us uncomfortable asking. Desperate needs give rise to desperate questions, which causes us to be uncomfortable, but cause us to seek Him with greater earnestness.

It makes us push aside our daily routines, comforts, and shallow living and seek Him. He longs to answer, but not always then and there. At times, time has to pass. Like water that runs over jagged rocks are smoothed, so pain has a way of humbling us, helping us to get our priorities straight, and now, He has our full attention. As we continue to search and seek, we position ourselves to be loved by Him. He can love us, teach us, and in time we may get the answer, or we no longer need the answer because we know He loves us (Amen).

Next question, what would you consider the Christian Faith’s biggest objection? Is it not because of its one-way “one-way” stance? That there is only One Way to be saved, to have Eternal Life, that there is only One True King, only One Truth, One True Confession, and only One Name in which we must be saved “under Heaven” (no other faith, no other name) no other teaching, doctrine or belief, One Name for the forgiveness of sin and only One Way to live life. There’s only ONE. Those statements are offensive statements to most people.

Equally offensive is that Christianity absolutely denies that all religions lead to God, and it denies that all faiths lead to the same place (Heaven). Also, the statement, ” It doesn’t matter what you believe, it just matters that you believe,” is probably one of the most ignorant statements I’ve heard. It’s just another lie that is so ridiculous that it sounds profound—one of many from satan’s bag of lies. Just think how many soldiers died in wars for their belief in this nation. Their beliefs were specific.

Therefore the posture of Christianity is all religions are just that, a religion. They are a way of belief, codes of conduct, means of thought, and ways of interpreting life and living life, but none of them can actually “grant” Eternal Life, forgiveness of sin, or the Abiding Presence of the Holy Spirit, which seals the deal when it comes to Salvation. That is the guarantee that one’s faith is genuine and authentic and has been honored by God Himself.

The Holy Spirit is the Heavenly down payment of His presence now and of much better things to come – so cool. And there is no middle ground; you have been given the Holy Spirit, or you haven’t, you are not “half saved,” and there are no negotiations. It’s either you have believed and confessed Christ as your Savior and repented of your sins, or you haven’t (we have all sinned and often need forgiveness). Is God being mean by having such strict requirements? Does He have the right to require a One Way belief; “It’s His way or it’s no way?”

John 3:14-18

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so, must the Son of man be lifted up:

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

(I love story pictures to explain the truth. Man’s drowning in his ocean of sin, the ship’s captain called Salvation, sees us drowning and throws a Life Saver to us named Jesus. Is the Captain throwing us His Life Saver condemning or trying to save us? And if we do not grab unto His Life Saver and drown, whose decision was that, His or ours?)

**So God does not force anyone to believe, but He has the absolute right to establish the standards to which one can have a relationship. He absolutely has that right. If we have requirements for people to be our friends, how much more does a Holy God, Creator of the Universe, have? We make God into “our image” when we question Him or judge Him as if He was one of us. If we got one glimpse of His Majesty, we would pass out as dead men or tremble in fear (28:1-4).

Only Christianity leads to Eternal Life, other faiths proclaim Eternal Life, but only Christianity “lays the groundwork for it.” Why? Because Christ paved the way via His death. Only in Christianity is God Exalted, “High and Lifted Up” a Holy God, Pure and Righteous, and cannot look on sin or be approached by a man in his natural state. Still, because He (Jesus) took on my sin and your sin and paid the penalty for it on the Cross (death), He, God, can now engage with us (all other faiths emphasize our good deeds as if we could earn or gain our salvation).

Therefore because of what Christ has suffered on our behalf, He does have every right to set a standard of Holiness, “You are to be Holy as I am Holy ( Lev.11:44).” However, His Holiness is impossible for us, it’s unattainable, but it is in Christ, the sinless Lamb of God and His Holiness is “imputed” to us when we confess Him as our Savior and receive forgiveness for our sins (that’s the definition of Grace, God’s unmerited favor, just as an orphan adopted by the King becomes heir to the throne).

Another word picture. I have a nursery background, and part of my experience dealt with grafting specialty trees such as Japanese Maples. We would use the seedling for the “host” and graft on our tree (a tiny branch or bud). The two would become one as the cells of the two healed. The minerals and water from the rootstock would flow into the graft giving it life. This is precisely what happens when we abide in Christ.

John 15:4

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

It’s incredible, this invitation is from God Himself!! Hence the reason why the Gospel is called the Good News. We now have 24-7 access to Him. It’s beautiful, beyond words to describe and comprehend. To have a relationship with The Father is Thee Pinnacle of this Life, there is nothing better, period! If you disagree, that’s okay for now, for we have all felt that way; however, it is wrong, and you need to mature in Him.

***We fail at ever being pure enough EVER to approach a Holy God on our merits; therefore, He has instituted Grace. Grace is very costly to God because it cost Him the death of His son, but because of that, He can grant us His Atonement, “the payment for my sin.” Grace then comes, and through years of trials and victories, growth occurs, and I begin to take on His likeness. Yet we all know that I’m not righteous and that you are not, but via His Grace, His Presence with us, we are given a most beautiful gift called Sanctification (just as if I’ve never sinned). It’s somewhat challenging to explain, but here’s a simple explanation. It’s when you take a street child (me, you), poor and dirty, uneducated in the ways of the Kingdom, and the King adopts us for no reason other than He has chosen to love us. We did nothing to deserve it, nor could we. It’s a gift from the King, and it is given to us when the Holy Spirit is sent upon confessing Christ as our Savior. The Holy Spirit is the proof of our adoption.

Early on, I thought, as many do, that I could earn God’s favor by being good. I never took to heart that I already had His favor, and now all He wanted was for me to spend time with Him in prayer and reading the Bible, getting to know Him. This proves how blind and ignorant I was; we are of God. As soon as we accept that He loves us just because He loves us (which is problematic because it’s very humbling, we want to be loved for something), we then become more submissive to His will. His love changes us. As clay in the potter’s hand, He seeks to form His nature in us. And I did say clay, moist dirt, not gold, silver, no precious metal, just moist dirt, but what He can do with moist dirt in His hands is amazing!

Isaiah 57:15

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the “contrite ones” (crushed into dust, pulverized).

Isaiah 66:1-2

Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is — the house that ye build unto me? And where is the place of my rest?

For — all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word (poor, contrite and trembleth at my word; to walk and exist in Awe of God, to be consumed with wanting to please Him. To this man or woman will God “look,” which means “looking somewhat intensely in a focused way at something;” to regard or watch).

He gave up His life for us because we could NEVER be good enough, holy enough, or pure enough ever to merit seeing the face of God, which means we stood condemned. Yet He could not have that, why? John 3:16

For God so loved the world that HE sent His only son.” Question, how much love would you need to sacrifice your only son or daughter for someone else?

It’s way beyond me. I could not conceive of sacrificing either of my daughters for someone else. Therefore since He did, it only stands to reason the following; God sets the standard, the requirements for us to know Him. Of that small group of people (narrow is the gate and few there be that find it…Matt.7:13&14), no man or woman can meet the standard without the intervention of the Holy Spirit. So then, where does that leave all the other beliefs and good deeds and actions of good men and women? THEY ALL FALL SHORT because there is no deed done and no heart pure enough that can ever be equal to the Holiness of God. WE must repent, for only judgment awaits if we don’t, but it all can change. Once we understand our sinful state before a Holy God and see His love for us, we have hope.

John 14:23-24

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man loves me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him ( we are not just anybody now we become God’s Temple! Amazing!

**He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the

Father’s which sent me.** (in that day of judgment, no one can stand before GOD and say that GOD did not do all to save them).

John 10:14-15

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

As the Father knoweth me, even so, know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

John 10:27-30

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them to me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand (talking about being security). My Father and I are one (Jesus is not “A” God, He is GOD, part of the Trinity).

We are so well protected when we come under God’s righteousness. Trials and hard times don’t stop, they are just part of Life, but they teach us to trust Him, and we learn that He is Big enough to make all things work for our good.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to those who are called according to his purpose (many times it doesn’t seem like it, but that is where trust/faith comes in and understanding the Cross, He paid way too much to fail us. It may take time to see “behind the curtain,” but as we trust Him, we mature our faith. And as we mature, we may come to understand the purposes of our hardship, or we may never understand, but knowing that He loves us is all we need to know.

John 14:26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (there is perfect harmony in the Trinity of God). And similar when we are right with God, abiding in Him.

Father God,

Thank you for these words. They are hard to read, but they are Life and said in love and for our good. Removing cancer is painful, but it is necessary to save a life. If we are willing to go through so much pain to save our temporal life, should we not care the more to pursue Christ for our Eternal Life? Cause us to heed Your words and follow in Your way. Help us to say no to our flesh and pride and understand that it is my honor to forsake the wants of this life to pursue You, my Savior. Nobody loves me like You. My greatest satisfaction comes from being in a relationship with You and doing Your will. Nothing can touch that.

Thank you,

Your son by Grace,

Arthur

Author’s note – I was sharing with my friend who edits Vida that this Vida reminds me of searching for crawfish with my grandson. We walk along the edge of streams, especially where there is a collection of rocks, and begin to turn them over. As we do, all the dirt and muck trapped under the rocks get washed away by the stream, and when we put the rock back down, it’s all clean. God wants to do the same, turn us over, expose all the sin and shame we are hiding, allow His Holy Spirit to clean us, and then set us down clean and pure. Please allow Him to, there is nothing He does not already know about me or you.

Enjoying Life Part I

Psalm. 119: 9-12

How can a young person stay on the path of purity?

By living according to your word.

I seek you with all my heart;

do not let me stray from your commands.

I have hidden your word in my heart

that I might not sin against you.

Praise be to you, Lord;

    teach me your decrees.

Walking in harmony with God or being in agreement with God is my definition of enjoying life.   This verse is David doing just that. There can be no enjoying life the way God intended it to be when my life is in conflict with the Life Giver. We are plagued with guilt, insecurity, fear, pride, loneliness, and doubt. How can there be a union? These emotions result from wanting to do life my way instead of His way, which is what the scriptures teach. How do we cope with these negative emotions if we do not want to submit to the Lord? It varies between individuals, but one way is by achieving goals. If I do this or become that, I will not be so insecure or afraid, and I will be happy. Or if I can get in with this group or date this girl/guy, then I must be somebody, and I will not doubt myself. Or if I could get along with my spouse, I would be more secure about my marriage. Or if I get that promotion, I know I will be a good provider, and people will think I’m important.

We believe attaining these goals will rid us of these negative emotions. Things will be better when we get them, right? It becomes a day of reckoning when we do attain our goals, and the happiness we achieve does not last. We then set other goals, never realizing that the problem is the absence of God in our life. We visited the Oregon Coast (camping) early in our marriage, and I loved it. We were living in Fresno, and I felt that our lives would be better if we could only move there. We were seeking a simpler life, especially since we both came from a coastal environment. The ocean always gave us peace. However, I learned before moving that my flaws and personality quirks follow me. The Lord showed me that Peace, true peace, is not in a place but in focusing more of my attention and time on knowing Jesus. Goals are admirable, but they are not the answer the soul needs.

Taking heed” means to guard, to watch, to listen to with the purpose of obeying. Here’s a word picture of taking heed. Imagine you are lost, cold, and hungry in the wilderness, and night is fast approaching. You need to light a fire and only have two dry matches. You would be so careful lighting that fire, being sure that the kindling you selected will lite, and once lit, you would tend to it carefully. You would also ensure you had enough wood to keep it going. Your next meal, warmth, and survival depended upon that fire. If we attended to God’s Word and prayer with the same kind of attentiveness and dependency, we would be less apt to stumble and be less apt to believe that things, people, or places were the answer. We would be stronger, defeating deceit and temptation. Our lack of commitment to knowing His Word gets us in trouble. As we do take heed to His Word, we grow the spirit of man.

Zechariah 4:6

Then he answered and spoke unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Unfortunately, many of us are easily distracted and do not have that kind of dependency on the Lord. We go to church and maybe even pray over our meals, but that’s as far as we go. There is no conviction to With my whole heart have I sought thee: we are not 100% in. We are not concerned about O let me not wander from thy commandments. We lack the fear of God that causes us to seek and change. Our hunger and thirst are not 100% for Him; it is mixed with the passions and desires of the carnal man.

Psalms 42:1-2 Thirsting for God

As the heart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL VERSE OF WHAT IT MEANS TO SEEK HIM FULLY, TO SEEK HIM AS IN HAVING A … “LONGING” or “THRIST” for God.

And though David is very much on the right track of seeking God, it didn’t exclude him or us from the struggles of this life.

Psalms 42:5

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted ( troubled, stressed, worried) within me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise himwho is the health of my countenance, and my God ( health in this usage means protection, fortified walls, security). As human beings, we need that!

What does maturity as a Christian look like? As the verse says, as we battle against worldly fears, insecurities, temptations, and just the general “stuff” of life, we know that we shall praise Him. As we mature in Him, we see more, and as we say, hindsight is 20/20, and so is spiritual maturity. Faith becomes our road map; we trust God for the journey, and the victories come as we believe. David is a man of war, couples two concepts together, the pleasure of feasting and defeating one’s enemy…

Psalms 23:5-6

“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil (symbolic of the Holy Spirit) ; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

On our worse day, in the presence of my enemies, I can focus on my Lord and know He has me, so with joy my cup runneth over…

Here’s a saying, “Small God, Big problems, Big God, small Problems, though the problems be the same. His presence nourishes us.

There can be periods of fun living in this world, especially when one attains a goal, but that cannot compare to the peace and love that God gives and at what cost to ourselves or our family are we paying to attain a worldly goal, a goal that is passing. And what happens to our goals when something terrible happens? Car accidents, sickness, death, stress, and arguments happen to all of us, yet we are less affected by them when we walk in harmony with the Lord. When we go out from under the Lord’s umbrella, we compromise that. When we compromise our Godly values to attain a goal that is contrary to God’s Word and do it enough times, we soon no longer feel God’s conviction over it. The Bible calls this “searing your conscience.” It now becomes a pattern of behavior, and a stronghold is formed in us. A stronghold or fortress that the enemy operates from.

As in war, the enemy seeks to develop a “beachhead” where he can continue to make assaults on our soul and take more ground. If, as a man, I am tempted with sexual lust, that can be a “beach head” if I yield to it. The enemy wants to exploit that weakness and develop other roads of captivity. We need to war against our carnal nature with God’s Word aggressively. Use the superior armor God has given us. Proverbs 5, 6, 7, and 8 are God’s heavy artillery against lust. We need to realize that the enemy seeks to compromise our life. He loves the lie that says, “Oh I’ll just do this once, it’s no big deal.” Say this enough times, and it’s how another “beach head” is established, and more and more of your freedom is being eroded. Our best defense is a strong offense. Focused on growing in Him and allowing Him to close these roads of lust and deceit by spending time in His Word. Become His son of Grace, “man up!”

For my sisters, what I have learned from being married for 42 years and raising two daughters is that women struggle with insecurity, “the feeling of being less than.” The Lord has excellent verses for this, but first, you must ask yourself what I am focused on. Is all my security based on my looks, clothing, outward approval, etc., for then you are like the parable of the man that built his house on the sand? That is precisely what you are doing. You must change your focus and be like the man that built his home on the rock. You must change your focus to pleasing Christ. Focus on being God’s daughter by Grace is the best decision you will ever make. You are en route to multiple victories.

Proverbs 31:10

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

Proverbs 31:30-31

Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD shall be praised.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.

This is where we need to use our heads and not our emotions to guide us. How many famous attractive women get married and end up in a divorce? What happened? Did they become less attractive? No, they just proved that it takes more than “looks” to have a successful relationship. This is the outcome when we follow the world’s values more than God’s. Rather receive your “fullness and identity” from the Lord. YOU are His Daughter, can there be any title, fame, or importance greater than that? Now grow in the joy of what it means to be His daughter. I promise you; you will never regret this decision.

Psalms 42:8

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life ( is my response to Him).

Enjoying life is something so much more than just everything going my way. It’s having favor with God and knowing that brings confidence and peace when faced with difficulty. When you live this truth, that alone helps us surmount life’s hard things. Therefore searing your conscience by repeatedly and purposefully disobeying God’s injunctions is much like burning your fingertips; pretty soon, they have no feeling. It’s a pretty stupid thing to do. Remember, He convicts us for our good; the sin in us separates us from Him. Sometimes we have reasons for why we ignore Him. We are hurt, we feel He has let us down, etc. I think we all have felt this, so talking to a friend who is a firm believer or a pastor would be wise because keeping our distance from Him will only incur more pain.

Proverbs 1:5

A wise man will hear and will increase learning, and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

God will not do life our way; He’s not that stupid. He will do life His way, the right way, and it’s up to us to get on His agenda, not vice versa.

If we continue disobeying the Holy Spirit soon, the conscience becomes silent. This, to me, would be a terrible place to arrive too. I’ve met unmarried couples that sleep together. It’s almost expected in today’s world; some even claim to be Christian. People say the Bible is outdated, which is their reason not to obey. Yet God made marriage and sexual union a specific way, always for our best. Ignoring this or “trample on His way” is only to hurt ourselves.

Hebrews 13:4-5

Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Let your conversation( your life) be without covetousness ( and sex outside of marriage is just that) and be content with things you have, for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor — forsake thee.

“whoremongers and adulterers” refers to all sexual misconduct, from opposite sex to same-sex. So maybe it’s a “cost” to obey God, but God promises never to leave or forsake us, and what is that worth? To repent and then seek Him to help me straighten out my life would be the most intelligent decision I ever made and the hardest thing I’ve ever done. However, to have Him as my Lord, Savior, and Friend is worth every bit of the struggle and more. Remember, a wise decision now means fewer regrets, with Eternity awaiting.

However, if we continue to disobey, this is another area of our life where we can sear our conscience.

1 Timothy 1:18-20

This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightiest war a good warfare;

Holding (keeping) faith, and ( hence) a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith (doing away with their faith) have made shipwreck of their conscious of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Father,

I come to you convicted by Your Word regarding my sins. Though I feel bad and ashamed, I know this conviction is because You love me and want to become my spiritual Dad. I’m so grateful that my sins do not lessen or deter your love for me. Thank you. According to John 3:16, I accept Jesus as my Savior and ask for forgiveness for all my sins. I ask for your Holy Spirit in my life now to walk with me. Please help me not to grieve the Holy Spirit or sear my conscience by living contrary to your will. Give me the desire to read your Bible, go to a Bible-teaching church, and make Christian friends that want to live a life pleasing to You. These are the things I need to do to grow my faith in You. Please help me to do them. Lastly, let me not become discouraged by the battle ahead of me. The devil has always hated me, but now that I belong to You, I have become his enemy. He will do his worse to cause me to denounce You. Thank you for your love that caused you to die a gruesome death on the Cross for me, something that no one else would ever do for me. Amen.

Thank you beyond words,

Arthur

Getting Out the Roadblocks Part IV

Welcome to this month’s Vida and the final chapter on Getting the Roadblocks Out.

Can a Christian be oppressed? Note that I said “oppressed,” not processed. If you are a born-again Christian, you cannot be processed, for Christ abides in you via the Holy Spirit, but oppressed, yes. That means you are born again, seeking to love Jesus, but specific triggers go off, and then like a puppet, you do things that you hate. You don’t have the power to defeat it.

Crash and burn is another way to put it, and then the devil is there or our guilt, and this pervasive lie goes through our head, “What’s the point of trying to be a Christian, when it really counts, I blow it.” We become so discouraged and feel like giving up, yet the only one that is surprised is us, not the Lord. That’s good news; our sins and shortcomings have all been accounted for on the Cross. It’s not good news that we sin. Sinning is never good news. However, it is good news that we cannot disappoint our Dad. He is such a good Father and forgives us all our sins; we want to do everything to not sin.

Romans 8:13-15

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live (for every temptation we face, there is an equal and more significant promise of God for us to defeat it. He has not left us Fatherless, He’s there via His Word). For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear (or to fail); but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father (all these verses need to go deep inside of us, they should be memorized).

“The Spirit of Adoption;” The concept of adoption is a beautiful thought. He picked us, and that’s wonderful. In picking us, we had to agree; we had to say yes to Him picking us, and in so doing, we become His child with full rights. Just as a naturally born son or daughter would have, and yet He is under no obligation to have us. He is choosing to be our parent, and in so choosing, He chooses to love us, and correction and discipline are part of that, just as we do with our kids. If they stray and rebel, they will receive the consequences of their action, just like the Prodigal. He lost all his inheritance… but regained his relationship with his father. God is represented as the Father in this story.

Luke 15:16-22

And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him (the Father spent time daily looking at the horizon in hopes that he would see the familiar figure of his son. His heart yearned for his son) and had compassion, and ran (the Father ran to him, very undignified for the father to run but the father did not care), and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

Luke 15:24

For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to make merry.

The Father could not have been more overjoyed because he understood that his son was back on his terms. He learned the lessons needed; when we repent, it’s like a homecoming. Repentance is the way home from whatever crime, sin, or evil we have done.

The son could not be more repentant, requesting to be a servant, willing to give up his sonship rights because of how ashamed he was of his behavior, but his Father would have none of it. We must understand this, our view of our Heavenly Father is critical to our relationship with Him and how we live life. If you struggle in seeing God this way because you had a harsh father or maybe lack of a father, I would strongly suggest that you meditate on this parable. Meditate until your heart warms up and believes that your Heavenly Father is exactly like the Father in the parable. To see our Heavenly Father as Jesus portrays him will revolutionize your walk with Him. You will fear less, be more consistent in your devotional time, have greater joy and self-confidence, and overall enjoy life more and respond with more confidence to life’s problems. You will begin to become a beacon of His love. You are receiving His love for you and now will find in yourself the ability to love others (this is a crucial truth).

We are never worthy of His Love and Grace, but it is given to us. To not receive it is pride. Pride works two ways; I’m too good to stoop that low and apologize is one example of pride, or I can’t get off that easy; I need to do something to earn my way back is often an unrecognized example of pride. To believe I can do something to right my wrong before God is pride, but it is also a blindness, an ignorance of the Holiness of God. To understand that there is nothing I can do to cancel my sins but repent is to understand that “God is High and Lifted up,” Holy and completely unapproachable except by Grace, to begin to understand His Holiness and Greatness.

Isaiah 57:15

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones (contrite, picture a clay vessel crushed so that all that remains of it is the dust from which it was made from and now in the hands of God will be made anew).

A contrite heart is a gift, something every serious believer should pray for. It is the best security and armor against the wiles of the devil. All the devil’s schemes and temptations are embedded in our human pride, and to fear God as such is to give the enemy very little to work with. Amen

Isaiah 6:1-5

God Calls Isaiah

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw also — the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled — the temple.

Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

And one cried unto another and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen — the King, the LORD of hosts.

Now hold that and interject the Cross. The Great King, the Second Person of the Trinity, coming down from His throne, as a babe in the womb of Mary, to be born and to live a normal life and then to dwell, teach and suffer and die on the Cross for His creation.

This then is choosing to live in the Truth and allow the Truth to change us. And in His love for us, He changes us into His image, and we begin to get the victory over sin, depression, hopelessness, temptation, fear, etc., all the disorders common to man and all a result of the fall. All this is contrary to God’s purpose for us, for His Word says that…

Nehemiah 8:10

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry (depressed, or fretful) for the joy of the Lord is your strength (refuge, shelter, or a place of safety, a stronghold which the human soul craves and requires).

***This verse brings out a critical comment about the human soul. When sin entered, God’s Spirit left man. God made no provision for man to live absent of His presence, the connection that brought us joy. Therefore, in place of His joy came all the disorders we just mentioned, fear, insecurities, worries, anger, hatred, greed, jealousy, envy, etc., all resulting from disobedience. However, now because of Christ, we can respond with trust and choose joy because God is our refuge, shelter, and place of safety*** (let that sink in).

*(*), What example did Jesus leave us in dealing with satan’s lies and temptations, and are we in the Word enough to know when we are being lied to? Our two enemies are our flesh and satan, and the good news is they lessen as we become more connected to Jesus and know the Word. We can identify the lies more readily. Here are three key verses to memorize that fortify our intimacy with Him.

John 14:23

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man loves me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him (the same security we had before the fall).,

John 14:26-27

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (fearful or fretful, so if this a direct promise from Jesus, why are so many of us absent of His peace? Peace arises and is kept by purposely meditating upon His promises).

As we reconcile with God, a sense of divine favor is felt.

John 15:7-8

If ye abide (dwell with or in) in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

So when temptation or trials become manifested in our emotions, we feel depression or temptation or anger, but then we have the choice to believe our fear, etc., or defeat them with God’s Truth. We use our minds to recall His Words. This is the battleground; it starts in the soul as the flesh seeks one thing and our mind seeks another. We must defeat it before it controls us, just as Jesus did.

Matthew 4:3-4

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

And King David said

Psalms 119:11

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Therefore reading or not reading the scriptures is not an option. It is a necessity.

The struggle is real and complex, especially early on as we grow to trust Him.

Romans 7:14-18 (this is the most brutal truth for us to grasp. If and when we forget it, then guilt plagues us).

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I

If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Paul, the apostle, is being so candidly honest that we may not fully grasp what he is saying. He is simply saying I struggle with sin, and sometimes I lose. I do things or think things that I don’t want to do. Paul wrote half the New Testament, and the flesh was a struggle for him. Why is the flesh such a struggle? We can see it in our children, even the youngest ones. We do not need to teach them to take for themselves, to put themselves first; that comes naturally. Teaching them to share or be considerate of others needs to be learned.

Since man’s fall, we have dwelt with a self-aware nature called pride. Pride’s chief and foremost concern is to take care of number one. It is entirely against the laws of God to love the Lord your God with ALL your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself… It’s impossible without a changed nature, and even so, it takes time to mature and grow to that point. Have you ever worked with food color? You put several drops in a glass of water, and shortly after stirring, the water has thoroughly become the color of the dye. There is no part of the water that has remained clear. That is our sinful nature, it completely taints us, but we are never without hope, ever.

Psalms 119:9-12

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse — his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statues ( the power of God’s Word to listening ears and a yielding heart is undeniable).

However, I think it is essential that we understand the cloth we have been cut from. We must all appreciate the victory Christ paid for us, especially as we celebrate Easter. Without His sacrifice, the Word of God would not have the power it has. It has this power over us because we have accepted Christ as our Savior, and now the Holy Spirit, the power for all changes, can indwell us, the reason for the change. So we must cling to God’s provision for us. Our weaknesses and concerns may vary, but in our flesh, it all exalts our sinful nature, not God’s sinless nature.

Romans 7:23-25

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

How do we serve God with our minds by choosing to be obedient to what the Word says? Agree with God that whatever conviction He’s bringing to mind is a sin, don’t justify it. That’s the worst thing you can do. God knows the why and how, but the response God wants is for you to agree with His Word that it is a sin and ask for forgiveness. And why is it a sin? As with all sins, it creates a divide between Him and us. Our sin seeks to replace Him, which He doesn’t want. Maybe initially, it isn’t a big deal, but sin is like a small fire, always seeking to consume more, grow, and become more dominant.

In our hearts, we have a throne (as in a king), and our sins seek to sit there, but no one must sit there except God Alone. If anything or anyone sits there, then that’s the definition of an idol. It can be a thought, a belief, a person or our jobs, or anything we put before Christ. That is what a stronghold is made of, and it needs to come down. As the walls of Jericho had to come down, so do any walls around our hearts that keep Him out and the lie in.

And with each idol torn down, we gain more freedom as we confess. He may take the desire right away and heal the hurt or the weakness that gave it permission into your life, or once repented of, He may use it as a means to drive you into the Word to build up your faith or both. I’ve had both things happen to me, had the issue instantly gone, and have memorized specific verses for my concerns and found it chip away at the stronghold till it was gone. It’s like lifting weights; you are putting on spiritual muscle with each new verse learned. Soon saying no is not tricky. The yoke of bondage doesn’t fit anymore because of our growth. We are overcoming the weaknesses and lies that have held us captive( Amen).

Galatians 5:1

Stand fast (steady, anchored, rooted, unmovable) in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled (to be ensnared) again with the yoke of bondage.

Another translation says

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, therefore stand-fast being not entangled again with the yoke of slavery.

Sometimes we can feel like a marionette puppet with all its strings tangled. We need to have an urgency in dealing with known sins. We can’t be kind to it but decided to break its influence over us before it affects us more than our home. Just as physical characteristics come from our parents, so do specific sins. I may be bulletproof against a hundred different sins, but there is one or two that always get me, and more than likely, my parents struggled with them as well. Repentance is critical, for it brings God’s power to our defense.

James 4:6-8

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves, therefore, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double-minded (to have one foot on the dock and one foot in the boat, very unstable, and as long as we maintain that stance, we are ineffective for either side. That’s double-minded, two minds opposing the other).

In reading the above verse, if you are like me, I see the word resist and emphasize that but the power to resist is found in submissionSubmission speaks of our union with Christ, of our relationship and fellowship with Him, without which we have no power. In Greek, submit is Hupotasso; it means to place myself under, to become subject to. Therefore my job is to walk in union with God by placing myself under His authority, and then I can receive His Grace, and the Word becomes powerful in my life and in my mouth, defeating the lies and temptations of the world and my flesh. This is my position of strength, and I can, we can wrestle and defeat anything in me or outside of me. The rebellion is my carnal nature, and it won’t change until I get a glorified body. Therefore it must continually be defeated via my mind.

Romans 8:7-9

Because the carnal mind (or the flesh as it is known in other areas of The Word) is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God d0well in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

This is where it can get confusing; let me explain. Believing in Christ is like having three people in the same body. Just like God is a Triune Being, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, we too are a triune being when we have Christ in us. It is God the Holy Spirit, our soul (our person), and the flesh, or the carnal man who, as we just read, cannot please God. It is unable to subject itself to Him, and hence our battle. It is impossible to train the flesh to love Jesus, period.

Therefore assuming the Spirit of God does dwell in us, the next critical step is to know specific portions of God’s Word that deal with our struggles. We must learn to rethink life. For men, lust towards women may be natural; it’s built into our carnal man, but natural is not Holyand God wants His men to be Holy. Proverbs 5-8 became my go-to as a younger man. It was so helpful, and I was in it so frequently that I retained a good percentage of it today. For women, jealousy, and insecurities seem to be the main struggles. You must realize your value to Christ and His love for you. Realizing that will minimize your jealousies which are fueled by your insecurities. These will decrease as you increase your knowledge of God’s love for you.

Psalms 139:17-18

How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!

If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. Amen

Father GOD,

Take this wonderful study and its truths, and as a cowboy brands his Cattle, which is both painful as it impresses its ownership unto the hide of the cow or bull but shows and guarantees ownership and provision, so brand us with a fullness of your Holy Spirit. Let us defeat the strongholds and the oppression the enemy wants to keep us in. With each stronghold that comes down, let your joy increase, a sure sign of your growing presence in our life.

Love you,

Getting Out The Roadblocks Part III

Please watch the video introduction to our message here:

In this series, I feel in my spirit that we are dismantling and exposing the traps many of us have fallen into unknowingly. When a hunter seeks game, especially before rifles, they laid traps. It could be a pit that the animal would fall into or a trap that would clasp onto a leg. In our spiritual lives, these traps are real, and no amount of psychology, psychiatric help, or other resources can permanently remove them from us because they are spiritual.

2 Timothy 2:26

And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

1 Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

These “traps” can be past conflicts, compromises we regret, or things done to us or things we have done, producing emotions of bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, hatred, and the like, and these are only some of the tools in his bag. They adversely affect us, and though medication may help, it is like using a band-aid to stop the bleeding when stitches are needed.

Only God’s love and forgiveness can help us with guilt, depression (assuming our hormones are in balance), emptiness, loneliness, anger, feeling wronged, etc. These problems will not be resolved with just medication. We need instead to bring our concerns to the Lord, seeking His help and asking for forgiveness, or through Him, find the strength to forgive (forgiveness is not based on whether the person deserves it or not, but forgiveness is a necessity for me to gain freedom from the trap bitterness keeps me in. It only hurts me Luke 6:37 & Ephesians 4:31&32).

We need to find help and encouragement in His Word before it affects our relationship with Christ, who gave so much that I could be forgiven. Speak to a sister or brother who has been a believer for a while. They will pray with you and show you scriptures that will help. It’s super important.

Ultimately, it is knowing His love for us that heals us. Our souls are complex, and spiritual forces affect us from childhood. These are the hardest, the ones inflicted or experienced as a child. They become part of our souls. As mentioned before, I was blamed for my brother’s drowning. I was eight at the time. I carried that guilt into my forties before I could escape it. I needed to mature in my Christian walk to understand that since Christ died for my sins and I was completely forgiven, I had no right not to forgive myself. I did not have the right not to forgive myself. It took time and maturity to understand that.

It was like continually crucifying Christ again and again. He wanted me to live in His joy, not in my depression. So finally, I understood that I forgave myself and became free of a weight I had carried virtually my whole life, which is just one example. Many of us have experienced dramatic events as children, and that trauma goes deep and affects us to this day. For girls especially, it happens to boys as well. There is the concern of being molested, raped, or maybe even having an abortion (for older girls) that we regret.

It has affected your self-esteem. Once, you were happy and light-hearted and laughed, but now you are serious and feel like you are carrying a ton of bricks. To make matters worse, your friends do not understand, so often you are left alone. Even your judgment is impaired because of the guilt you carry. When things are terrible, you wish you were not here, and when good things come your way, you do not feel worthy of them, so you sabotage it so it does not happen. It could be a good job, a promotion, or even a nice man or woman to date.

Yet these actions that were done to you were not your fault, but as a child or young person, we are not mature enough to deal with them, so we blame ourselves. When dating now, instead of holding out for a Christian man or woman that truly loves Jesus, we go out with someone less because we do not feel worthy of someone better. We think, “who would want to date or marry me,” so out of desperation and insecurity, we settle for someone who dates us, provided we have sex with them, though we would prefer not to. We are too afraid they will leave us if we say no. Though if they loved you, as they say, they should be able to respect your feelings. This is a bad combination of low self-esteem and selfishness. With no respect for your feelings, the relationship is doomed to fail.

Do you want the correct answer from a man who raised two girls? Learn that Jesus loves you. Read the Bible, don’t date, don’t sleep around, go ahead and be weird; I give you permission. Instead of wondering who will call you, know that Christ is waiting for you. I know this sounds weird, but it is so true. Pray, talk to Him, ask Him to guide you, then read The Bible. Start with the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but memorize Psalm 23. Accept Christ as your Lord, ask Him to forgive your sins, and now start growing in Christ. Tell the Lord that it is His job to pick the church, the guy or gal you are to date, and especially the person you would consider marrying. For now, put dating on the back burner till you are stronger in your faith. Here are two excellent Bible verses that speak of His love for you and the restoration that will begin as you read and pray.

Jeremiah 31:3-4

The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel (put your name in place of Israel).’

: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.

John 3:15-17

That whosoever believeth in him (Jesus Christ) should not perish, but have eternal life.

For God so loved the world (again put your name instead of the world), that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (Any condemnation comes from us or satan. Conviction comes from God; conviction is meant to cause us to repent and turn to Him. Condemnation is meant to turn us away from God because we don’t feel worthy. The truth is that none of us are worthy, from the saint to the sinner; it is ALL GOD’S MERCY).

Now we must deal with obstacles to our growth. There is a saying that says sooner or later, you will deal with your parent’s demons. Just like emotional and physical characteristics come from the bloodline, so do spiritual liabilities from our parents. We do not like to talk about demons and their impact on us; that is precisely how they like it. When we do not acknowledge our enemy, he can hurt us, but when we bring him into the light, as we are doing, now we have a chance. Scripture does not shy away from this topic. It acknowledges satan and his demons.

1 Peter 5:8-10

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, — make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you.

1 John 4:1-5

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets (inhabited by demonic spirits) speaking lies are gone out into the world, Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: (God is salvation is what the name Jesus Christ means). And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is in the world.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater (mega) is he that is in you than he that is in the world (why? Because the Holy Spirit indwells all true believers).

If satan could quelch the fact that Jesus did come and die for our sins, he could effectively erase Jesus and Christianity from history. Praise God that that didn’t happen; now it’s up to us to carry the truth to the next generations.

1 Timothy 4:1-2

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times, some shall depart (desert, fall away) from the faith, giving heed (paying attention) to seducing spirits, (liars and impostors) and doctrines of devils (as opposed to God’s Word) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

The conscience is our God-given fortress to protect us from being seduced into believing lies. Yet without the Holy Spirit to guide us, we do not stand a chance against such a formidable foe. To sear your conscience is like taking a hot iron to your fingertips and burning them until they no longer feel. The hot iron has deadened the nerves, and as the fingertips are the sentries to the hand, protecting them from grabbing or holding something of harm, so too the conscience is to the soul. Continued exposure to the anti-Christ, anti-Biblical culture, and soon you will have no conscience. No ability to discern good from evil and wrong will become good, and good will become evil.

Isaiah 5:20-24

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight (have no need for God, for they have become their own god)!

… because they have cast away — the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised — the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Two popular lies taught and promoted as truth are “I am not a bad person,” and “do what makes you happy.” There is no such thing from God’s perspective as bad or good. It’s like saying I am 96% percent virgin. Well, you are or you’re not; righteousness is the same. You are either born again, made righteous by Christ’s blood, or not. Therefore bad or good is not what God sees; it’s forgiven and walking in a relationship with Him or not. Righteousness makes us right with God; good can never do that.

The Cross was not suffered to make us good but righteous. Now it is up to us to accept His gift, seek forgiveness and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, live righteous lives. To seek Him when we fail, repenting and asking for forgiveness, and to seek Him when we are getting it right. In both cases, we need Jesus. He is our advocate before the Father.

“Do what makes you happy,” goes against how we were made to enjoy a fulfilling life. The two greatest commandments Jesus gave us are to love the Lord your God with all your might, with all your strength, and with all your mind and heart, and the next is to love your neighbor as yourself (as if you are caring for your own needs). Focused on our happiness, we become self-absorbed. We are selfish by nature, and quite honestly, the carnal man does not know what they want; he thinks it does, but led by his passions, it becomes a road of disappointments and hard times. Look at movie stars or famous people; most are messed up. “Do as they will” is the motto for those pursuing the satanic agenda, which are not happy or peaceful.

We are way out of our league if we try to “be Christian” without the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit and the Word (The Bible). Also, belonging to a local Bible-teaching church body is essential. The saying, “there is strength in numbers,” is true when it comes to being connected to other believers corporately, but in a small group setting, e.g., a home Bible study group is the most important.

2 Corinthians 2:11

Lest — Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Satan’s agenda is no different than a pack of wolves. They chase the herd till one gets too tired to keep up or till one breaks from the pack – the end is soon as the pack descends on that one sheep or deer. Satan’s tactics are the same; he uses offenses to separate us from other believers or our ignorance of the importance of meeting together. Then, left on our own, it is so easy to fall into sin.

2 Corinthians 4:4

In whom the god of this world hath blinded their minds which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

We are in a war for our souls and our families’ souls. There are many verses on the demonic and how it seeks to influence us away from knowing Christ and the grievous harm it causes in our lives. Yet, at the same time, the devil doesn’t make us do anything. Flip Wilson coined the phrase, “the Devil made me do it.” In reality, satan knows our weaknesses, and all he has to do is present the carrot at the right time. We do the rest; we bite. We do not need much help from him. Our selfish nature is quite capable of messing up our lives. Why is this true? Scripture teaches us that we are born in sin or rebellion to God’s righteousness, and with iniquity, sinning brings forth spiritual death.

James 1:13-15

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

The root meaning of iniquity is to be bent. Our sinful nature has the propensity to gravitate and bend toward specific sins. Some people struggle with gambling, some with telling the truth, others keeping pure thoughts and lust, others have a temper or jealousy or are challenged in being friendly and considerate to others, and others it’s just our pride; we feel pretty good about who we are.

Luke 18:9-14

And he spake — this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican (tax collector).

I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

So the value of humility in our Christian walk is paramount. We constantly compare ourselves to others. That is not God’s standard, Holiness is God’s standard, and we all fail there. We fail from the start. I sighted the two first commandments to love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and who does that? Then we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, and who does that? So this is the true comparison, and we all fail, hence our need for forgiveness, faith in Christ’s atoning work, and the need to be in dwelt by the Holy Spirit.

It’s not easy following Christ; we need to develop some “spiritual muscle.” However, living life without Him is even harder. Living life as best as you can was my dad’s way. I saw the pain and emptiness in that. After two failed marriages and my brother (who rebelled), and my younger brother drowning, life only became one disappointment after another. Years later, he found pleasure in a job he had created but was let go. In tough times I learned that there has to be someone you can run to, someone greater than yourself. Otherwise, it’s hard not to become disillusioned, bitter, or apathetic. Being your own god is tough. I’ve been a believer for so long that I don’t know what it’s like not to have The Lord to run to. His peace, guidance, love in my life, and the assurance of Eternal Life for my loved ones and I are huge. I’m not saying that being a Christian is easy because it’s not, but it is much better than life without Him.

James 1:12

Enduring Tests

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried( and stands), he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised them that love him.

Proverbs 3:11-14

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

For — whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father — the son in whom he delighteth.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom and the man that getteth understanding.

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

Throughout life, we deal with nurture, attitudes, and inherited dispositions, and we deal with “Nature,” things that happened to me as a child or youth or as an adult. As mentioned, being blamed for my brother’s death yoked me to an emotional harness of guilt and shame (and the earlier a negative event happens to us, the harder it is to get over, it goes deep into us and forms our views of self and life).

As a 14-year-old boy, I babysat for my neighbor, a single mom with an eight-year-old son and a live-in boyfriend hooked on porn. He had playboys all over the house, bathroom, living room, and kitchen. It was my first time being exposed to it. I only knew a little about them because my grandfather gave some to my dad. I went to see them, and my dad stopped me, but he stopped me in a different way; there was no love in it. I had no idea what was inside, but I soon learned what my dad was looking at.

It was an awful, dirty feeling. It was more than I could process. I felt like I ate a whole trash can of garbage. I had never felt like that before. I prayed and asked for forgiveness and felt God’s forgiveness, but from then on, I didn’t see girls with the same innocence; something was taken from me. As I matured, that sense of regret and guilt never left; only now, the weight was doubled. I read where David had sinned with Bathsheba and then read the Psalm he wrote, and that ministered to me so much that I committed it to memory.

Psalms 51:1-10

A Prayer for Spiritual Cleansing

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightiest be justified when thou speakest and be clear when thou judgest.

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part, thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop (a specific plant dipped in lamb’s blood and sprinkled on the altar and on the person confessing), and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me hear joy and gladness; the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me (this became my strength, my hope, and my step forward).

Our iniquity seeks to bend us away from the Gospel of Truth and ultimately damn us while adversely affecting our life. It could be through porn, drugs, drinking, divorce, arguments, and the like, or just by an un-surrendered life. Living life on our terms, maybe going to church so we can believe we are a good person, but that only camouflages our need. We must humble ourselves before Christ, ask for forgiveness, and invite Him in. This is step one, but it’s a hard climb. Just as I accepted Him into my life but still had much guilt and shame to deal with. These are called strongholds. I believed lies as truth, and it takes much time, trial, and maturity to realize that the truth you believed was, in fact, lies, but then once realized, there is such freedom. We must find the Bible verse that counters the lie we believe and meditate upon it till freedom comes.

We must learn to gain our strength and sense of identity from an intimate relationship with The Lord via His Word. As we do, we can stand against our flesh and the demonic that seeks to control us. We must learn these verses…

1 John 4:4

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

Romans 16:25

Now to him that is of power to establish (to anchor) you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

Romans 7:22-25

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

The bottom line is that once we accept that our flesh, “body,” will continue to want to sin, it is only through renewing our mind through the Word and memorizing specific promises that speak to our struggle that we begin to start living free. And there is no guilt in feeling what the flesh feels, but we must counter it with God’s Truth. I spent years feeling guilty because I felt lust though I never gave into it. And then, once I understood that the flesh would not change, no matter how much scripture I knew, the battle became much easier. The thought would come in, but I had powerful guards that would quickly escort the thought out. Once I (we) learn this revolutionizing truth, we can “kick butt.” As a spirit-filled believer realizing this and the authority we have IN CHRIST, the one running will not be you or I. I address this comment to both men and women, specifically to men, the head of the home.

This is a command that God gives Joshua before entering the Promised Land, which is symbolic of the Promise Land in our hearts. God wants to bless us, but we need the take the “land” of our hearts back.

Matthew 22:37

— Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind (which none of us do, but it is with that passion that Jesus wants us to seek Him for it mirrors how He loves us, hence why He was willing to suffer the torture and belittling prior to the Crucifixion and then the Crucifixion). We are greatly loved.

Joshua 1:8-9

This book of the law (The Bible) shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make — thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

If you read Joshua in any way other than a direct command from God, you are reading it wrong. This is not an opinion survey; God is not asking us to vote, but to do!

Father God,

Thank you for these truths, help us to understand and stand in the freedom that You purchased for us. The road against the deceiver is not easy, he knows all our weaknesses. Yet if we keep our focus on You we will overcome, for greater are You that is IN US than he that is in the world. Amen

1 John 4:4

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

We love You,

Amen/ Arthur

Getting The Roadblocks Out Part II

Please watch the video introduction to my message here:

There can be many roadblocks in our lives and many reasons for them. One roadblock that is not emphasized enough is our disobedience to the scriptures. Some of these actions are purposeful, we choose to ignore God’s commands, and some are because of Biblical ignorance. I believe one that the church has under-emphasized is the teaching of water baptism and being baptized in the Holy Spirit. Both were heavily taught and practiced in the early church and were taught for a reason. The next step after one accepts Christ, and one must accept Christ to be saved (attending church or ascribing to religious beliefs is not sufficient), is water baptism. The best example of this is the Ethiopian eunuch.

Acts 8:35-37

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same Scripture, and preached unto him, Jesus.

And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Baptism is a public statement that you want to follow Christ. It gets you out of being a closet Christian. I was not baptized immediately upon my conversion; it was a couple of years later. During the first two years of my conversion, I wandered, being 14, when I came to Christ. My close friend at the time was not Christian and became an obstacle to my Christian growth. I was double-minded or, as the Bible calls it, “lukewarm.” Toward the end of this period, I heard a message from my pastor about being lukewarm. Revelations 3 is the verse, and it scared the lukewarm-ness right out of me. I recommitted my life back to Christ.

Revelation 3:15-16

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou were cold or hot.

So then, because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew (spit) thee out of my mouth.

I did not want to be “spit” in God’s mouth, let alone spit out. I started attending my church’s youth group more and really started listening to Sunday morning messages more intently. Peter and I broke up as friends. He told me I was no longer fun to hang around with. It hurt because we had been good friends for a while, but I could feel the drag on my soul. I had been praying about breaking up with Peter, but his salvation was a concern to me, and I did not know what to do. I was really hoping that he would come to my youth group. However, when he decided to leave, I took that as answered prayer. Without Peter, I began growing in my faith. I was unaware of how much of an influence he was on me, like my non-Christian dad was on my mom. I could now see why the scriptures teach not to be unequally yoked. Not only was I living the effects of that in my home, but also with Peter. From this point on, all relationships close to me were going to be believers.

2 Corinthians 6:14

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

As I became more involved in my church’s youth group, I volunteered to be a church camp counselor. It was the summer of my junior year. I was 16. At camp, I had ten boys between 10 and 12, and I was serious about teaching the scriptures to them. We had church Bible studies taught by my friend’s dad, the camp pastor. After the message, we would break up into our groups and discuss the message. I also had a female partner who had ten girls. The idea was to represent a family structure. This was tough. I was way over my head, especially with the girls. I had no sisters.

The boys pushed my buttons one time too many. It was Wednesday night, and they kept messing around, so at 11:00 pm, I made them get out of their sleeping bags, go outside and do push-ups till they couldn’t do them anymore. My partner, with some of her girls, overheard my voice and came out to see what was happening. I was mad, and she being several years older, helped me to calm down, but the boys learned that night that I was not to be messed with. The last two days of camp went very well. I still felt way over my head and prayed hard not to blow it. The last message from Mr. Bixby was about accepting Christ and getting baptized. After the week, I was now ready. I was all in and wanted to obey the Lord and get baptized. He talked about the baptism of water and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He was a Baptist minister who knew the scriptures on baptism. All I knew was I wanted it all.

When Pastor Bixby baptized me, I felt the power of the Holy Spirit come over me, and I could not stand. Fortunately we were in the pool and Pastor Bixby could hold me up until I got my feet under me. As I got out of the pool, my partner asked me to baptize her. We asked Pastor Bixby and he okayed it because I had just gotten baptized by the Holy Spirit. He felt I was now qualified. This was all so new to me. Karen, my partner, had never seen a young man so committed to Christ (if she only knew my struggles), and it moved her to become more committed.

My last surprise was equally amazing. There was a very rebellious young man in my group who I ended up spanking. I told him that his behavior would hurt him in the future and that I was spanking him because I cared about him. He said his dad never spanked him, and it showed. Before I sent him to the cabin, he said he would tell his dad. This happened on Wednesday, so I had a couple of days to be stressed about meeting his dad, but I spent extra time with Rick on Thursday, showing him that I did care. Friday came, and all the parents came. Some I met, and after Rick greeted his dad, he returned and hugged me and thanked me for caring. I was so overwhelmed with everything that had happened I just cried. Karen saw me and came up and asked if I was okay. I told her what had just happened, and she understood and hugged me. That hug felt so good. I saw her a few times after that in church, but then no more. She was 21 and was going to college in another state.

That is my experience with water baptism and baptism in the Holy Spirit. Others teach that unless you speak in tongues, which I don’t (unless you count Spanish), you are not baptized in the Holy Spirit. I disagree, but at the same time, I know the scriptures that give examples of people being baptized in the Holy Spirit and afterward speaking in tongues. I have no dispute with those that teach that. Typically what is taught is you first get baptized in water as an outward confession of your commitment to Christ, and then sometime later as you are maturing in your faith, you feel as though you need more. That becomes the internal indicator that God wants to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Jesus put it this way…

Luke 24:46-49

And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high (the baptism of the Holy Spirit).

The word endued means to put on, like a cloak or jacket and power is “ achieving power.” Dunamis is the Greek word. It is used throughout the New Testament. It means strength, capable, able, so combining the two words is to put on power ( that God clothes you in) that enables you to accomplish what He is calling you to. Yet we cannot put Jesus in a box and say it must be done in this order. There is an account of a Greek man named Cornelius, and his group received the Holy Spirit even before getting baptized.

Acts 10:44-47

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid — water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

There is no “formula,” but generally, this is the order. One becomes a Christian, gets water baptized, and then gets filled with the Holy Spirit. There was no question in the early church of the need and the practice of water and Spirit baptism. Disobedience to this is a significant roadblock and the first way the enemy siphons off immature believers. Obedience is always critical, especially in the early years of being a believer. I hold the church at fault for not emphasizing this teaching and practice.

This is when you now want to be 100% His. This enables you to witness for Christ more effectively. Peter, through the Holy Spirit, said our faith was precious, as gold tried in the fire.

1 Peter 1:6-7

Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: (trials). That the testing (refining) of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (the present hardships are preparing us for future glory).

Another roadblock is becoming offended at trials or not taking Christ’s words seriously.

These roadblocks or trials can be severe. Many years ago, my youngest daughter was dating a policeman, and they were considering marriage. Unfortunately, on a traffic stop, Matt got struck by a car and died. The father told me that God had no right to take him. “Matt was mine,” he told me. I was not able to help him. To tell God He had no right (assuming that it was God that took him and not just the risk of the job he was in) was to put yourself in the place of God. However, I was able to help my daughter, praise the Lord. Having gone through a death with my brother, I could relate to her, and slowly, as a family, we got back to normal. I was so grateful that God had prepared me to help my daughter. It made all the pain, guilt, and self-hatred worth it. I blamed myself for my brother’s drowning, though I was only eight.

This is often the case when a family member dies, and the family member that is present blames themselves. You always feel you could have done more. It’s an awful burden to carry. Even now, as I write this, strong emotions come back. I make myself remember that Bobby is with Jesus, and my emotions calm down. If I didn’t have Jesus and His hope, I would drink. It’s just simply too much.

This is just one of many roadblocks and offenses that could cause us to turn our backs on Christ. From family to work to massive personal insecurities and temptations. I had a vision during one of the most challenging times; I was on a tightrope. The chasm below me was enormous, sure death if I fell off, and there were miles of tightrope to travel. I was no good at walking on a tightrope, so confronted with such a huge challenge, I told Jesus that this was so beyond me that He needed to do it through me. Instantly I felt courage and hope. These were the words the Lord was waiting for to surrender to Him fully. I was still a little scared, but now I had hope, sensing His presence with me. I was learning a valuable principle of the school of faith: apart from Him, I can do nothing. Said in another way, God wants to do everything with us. He is so relational that every big and little thing in our life He wants to be part of. I was learning about how relational and loving my (our) Dad was (and is).

John 15:4-5

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can — do nothing.

The word picture here is fabulous. If you have ever driven through Napa county in late summer or any other regions where grapes are grown, you see the grapes hanging from the vine. The grapes would not exist except for the vine. Jesus wants us to be fruitful, but the fruit He wants is righteous fruit, something in our sinful nature we cannot produce.

Galatians 5:19-25

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

What kind of fruit is found on you or me, especially when things are not going our way? Now there is no condemnation in this. The Holy Spirit often puts us in difficult situations to expose these hidden weaknesses in us so we can acknowledge them, repent, and find His forgiveness and Grace to get past them. So please do not hide from the conviction of the Holy Spirit, but agree with Him and repent.

Hebrews 12:5-7

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Proverbs 3:11-13

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

For — whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father — the son in whom he delighteth.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding (and how is wisdom and understanding gotten, through submitting to His loving hand of chastisement). And did not Christ our Savior not have to do the same?

Luke 22:41-44

And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

The tension is so great in Him that His sweat was blood from ruptured vessels in His face. He bore the worst so we could benefit from His obedience. We only have to deny ourselves, but the weight and condemnation of our disobedience and sin rested and was fully satisfied by His death. The Spotless Lamb of God.

John 1:29

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Our greatest need is fulfilled in Him if we deny ourselves and follow Him. “Not my will Lord but Yours be done in me.” This needs to be the response of our heart. Many of us get so busy attending Bible studies and volunteering at church or with life, the kid’s sports, business meetings, and family functions that we neglect our time with the Lord. If your schedule is so tight that you do not have 30 to 45 minutes each day to spend with Him, then you are too busy. My suggestion is to lose some activities. He did not save us from doing ministry or from keeping us so busy that we neglected Him. That may sound strange, and “ busy” is like a drug to many of us. It makes us feel important and needed, but we are worshipping a false idol. There is NO GREATER sense of worth than sitting at His feet (figuratively speaking) and sensing His love and presence. If we would do just that, we would lose the need to go here or do that because our sense of worth would be rightly satisfied.

That may sound strange to you “ Martha’s out there, but to you, Mary, it’s a joy.

Luke 10:38-42

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was encumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But only one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

From where The Lord is, He only sees one critical thing, our relationship with Him. Nothing will outlast that or exceed it in importance. And learning to prioritize and live the Truth is the secret to feeling secure and victorious. The farther away we get from the Truth, the fewer victories we will have and the greater our struggles with insecurity, inferiority, stress, worry, etc.

He saved us because He loves us and wants us to know Him. For ministry to be effective and impactful, it must come as an outflow of knowing Him, never through education or learning how to work the crowd. I’ve known several pastors that have gone down this road only to have big churches with no depth. These churches are great for people who feel they can earn their salvation by doing good deeds, much like the Pharisees in Christ’s day. Burnout and broken families, and children that want nothing to do with Christianity come from that scenario. It is so sad, for they blame Christ for the breakup of their family, and Christ had nothing to do with it. He made marriage, but when a man seeks his good, his ego above being In love with Christ, this is one of the many scenarios that can happen. Christ said He would build to build the church to increase the donations etc. The Lord said the Church was His body and will care for it, but He is looking for faithful, self-giving pastors to entrust her to. Will that be us?

***

Father,

Help us to heed thy Word knowing that it is for our good to bring radical obedience to us, not from works that illusion of the flesh but firm, solid obedience from a heart that just loves and adorns You, I pray. It is all for our good despite the difficulty we may find it to obey. It will always be for our good from a Father who loves us so.

Getting Out The Road Blocks

Please watch the video introduction to my message here:

We all have experienced roadblocks in our life.

Have you had a difficult relationship that makes you hesitant to enter another one? Or an upbringing that taught you not to trust people? Or maybe you fear failure, so you always play it safe.

These examples are only a few of the multitude of emotional roadblocks we have to deal with. How do we grow past them? How do we become strong so that these negative influences do not control us? I hate feeling like a victim, don’t you? I am sure you feel the same way. We want to become a “victor,” which is exactly what Christ wants. We must learn to see life through the truth of scripture. That makes us a victor. The first step towards that is understanding that the love that our Savior has for us is what enables us to conquer. How many soldiers endured such hardness in prison camps because of the love their wives had for them? It’s what kept them alive. How much more should our Savior’s love keep us moving forward!

Jeremiah 31:3

The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Romans 8:31-32

What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things (that are for our spiritual good, not a new house or a Porsche).

Therefore the real question is, do you believe that God loves you? Without abiding and seeking Him

it will be hard to feel or sense His love, though these verses are absolutely true. I would tape these verses to your bathroom mirror and read them while shaving, putting on your makeup, or brushing your hair. We need to get these truths into us. What does John 3:16 say…

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.” It was God’s love for us that sent His son to die on our behalf. How can we not trust Him?

Therefore until we get past this first hurdle that God loves us, roadblocks will continue to appear and set us back.

Once we believe and know His love, we can begin to move forward. The next challenge is also tough, but it is sent to purge us from the values of the world.

Romans 8:30

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy of being compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Therefore instead of self-pity, which is a huge roadblock, this verse teaches us that present-day hardships do not compare to the glory that will be revealed in us. Eternity is a very long time. Too many of us make now our reality without offsetting it with an Eternal perspective. If we start living as sons and daughters of The Lord and put our hope in Him, we will gain the courage and endurance to keep moving forward in this life as victors

The suffering Paul endured in his life for Christ was a lot. Fox’s Book of Martyrs is a book every serious believer should read at least once. It will give you a profound appreciation for the roots of our faith; what others went through to preserve it. Now it is up to us to pass it on. “Raw Christianity” cares nothing for religious restrictions, observances, or beliefs that cannot be anchored in scripture. It has nothing to do with which church we attend. It has everything to do with submitting to God’s will.

Through the centuries proclaiming Christ has cost believers beatings, imprisonment, and their lives. I wonder, if it became illegal to be a Christian (as is currently being experienced by believers in communist & Muslim countries), what would happen? Would a church of 500 “professing believers” be whittled down to 100, or would it grow to 900? Pray to be counted among the faithful.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

From a Biblical definition, this is the root of what it means to be blessed. Receiving this truth is what makes us a victor regardless of the circumstances. What good is it to have all one can have in this life, reach the top, and find emptiness? This happens to many of the wealthy and famous, so drug abuse and debauchery are prevalent among them. There can be no substitute for experiencing God’s love. No amount of “the good” life can compare.

As believers, our lives should not be entangled with the values of this world. Materialism, status, or anything that is a prize to the world is an impostor and a false substitute for the life our Father wants to give us.

Seriously, how can one improve on having the Holy Spirit of God fill you? This is the very definition of LIFE. Sadly, this might not “float your boat” AS YET, but hopefully, as you mature in your faith and take a few hard knocks from life (unfortunately, that’s how we learn), this statement will bring you comfort and joy as it does me. When too much of the world dwells in us, we are like the seed thrown into the weeds (the parable of the sower that Jesus told).

Matthew 13:7-8

And some (seed) fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, (with the germinated seedlings) and choked them:

But other (seeds) fell into good ground and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

By holding onto the world’s values, we cannot fully appreciate what God is offering. Don’t worry; God knows how to change the human heart. If you truly want to be more Christ-like, then ask Him. Ask Him to give you a love for His Bible which will give you the strength to say no to your flesh and yes to Him, making you an obedient “son or daughter. There’s a great prayer that King David prayed and all serious believers since.

Psalms 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

And then we have God’s promises for sanctification.

Ezekiel 36:25-27

Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness and your idols, will I cleanse — you (the purpose of the Cross).

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away — the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh (make this your prayer, Lord you said…).

And I will put — my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in — my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

This is the role of the Holy Spirit. We all experience the need for approval. What better way than to have the Lord stamp His seal on our souls? When God created man, man was fully formed but lay lifeless until the Holy Spirit breathed life into him. This proves that we are spiritual first, then person, then flesh. However, ever since man sinned, our being changed. Our spirit (union with Christ died), our carnal nature ruled, and our person became governed by it. Consequently, we are plagued by such a strong need for purpose and meaning because of God’s absence in our life. By becoming born again, we return back to our created form, but it’s a fight against our carnal nature.

Genesis 2:7

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (living soul, not being).

Therefore man’s life was originally in the spirit, not in the blood as we are today. Imagine the vacuum in man’s soul when the Holy Spirit departed. God had to recreate man’s life with his blood. It is no wonder why blood and its sacrifice have been such a big deal both in our faith as well as in pagan rituals. For us, it speaks of forgiveness, hence the yearly sacrifice of a spotless lamb for the forgiveness of our sin, foreshadowing Christ’s ultimate and final atonement for man. For the pagan faiths, which often involved human sacrifice, it was blasphemy against God’s prize creation or animal sacrifice to idols, demonic deities that ruled over those cultures (e.g., Aztecs, Mayans, or the Incas as recent examples in history.)

After the fall, Adan and Eve, for the first time, saw themselves without God’s glory covering them. They saw their flesh. They were naked. To us being naked is to be without clothes. To them, it was without God’s glory.

Genesis 3:9-10

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

And he said, I heard — thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.

**All the insecurities of fear, self-conscience, self-hatred, jealousies, envy, pride, emptiness, hatred, etc., all of the evils that plague man come flooding in because of their disobedience, and when we disobey the Lord, we enter into satan’s realm (1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…”).

We are alive because God breathed His Life into us, and we became a living soul. Forgetting how we were created, do we turn to our carnal appetites to satisfy our spiritual need? We need to think soundly, understanding that our true inward need is still spiritual. We can only be truly satisfied by the Lord. He’s our Maker, and the proof of that is the struggle to find significance apart from Him.

We must return to Him, or if we are Born Again, then enjoy Him by having regular Bible studies. In doing so, every other relationship will, with time and maturity, be prioritized correctly. So, say goodbye to toxic relationships or relationships that use us, and we let them because our inward need is so great. Christ’s love for us will change that, and we will find as we mature, we will have the strength and inward confidence to say no to toxic relationships and yes to the ones God provides. Start to feel good about yourself, in your own skin. This is the goal of our Heavenly Father when we allow Him to love us just as we are.

Psalms 1 (Psalm of David)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

This is literally a step-by-step “formula” for curing all that ails us. What is good for our souls is also healthy for our bodies. Now, as you read the following verses, ask yourself if Paul and Silas were any less blessed than King David, who wrote Psalm 1. Remember, being blessed is not circumstantial; that’s our definition as human beings. It’s all based on favorable circumstances.

However, as believers in Christ, to be blessed is positionalnot circumstantial. As His son or daughter by Grace, nothing could be better. To have God Almighty as our Father and experience His love for us is wonderful. Without trial and problems, which represents the darkness, clouds, and storms in our lives, His guidance would not be appreciated. It’s the contrast between Pharoah at Israel’s back coming with chariots to kill and capture back the Israelites and with the Red Sea in front, trapped. Then through the course of just one night, the Red Sea is parted, providing a way to escape. Paul and Silas experienced this. They had no idea that the Lord would cause an earthquake; they just felt honored to suffer for their Lord.

Acts 16:16-19

And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most-high God, which show unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers (accusing them…)

Acts 16:21-24

And teach customs that are not lawful for us to receive or to observe, being Romans.

And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely:

Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison and made their feet fast in the stocks.

Did Paul and Silas do something wrong? Is this still the blessed life we read of in Psalm 1? Would we feel blessed if we underwent this kind of persecution, or would we think that God had abandoned us? I can almost hear Job’s friends, or maybe some modern-day believers accusing us of doing something wrong or not doing enough good deeds.

Acts 16:25-28

And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

And suddenly there was a great earthquake so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bands were loosed (however many were there where they were all free).

And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled.

But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

The jailer would have killed himself, but Paul stopped him; why? With the jailer dead, Paul and Silas could have easily escaped along with the rest of the prisoners. Who are these guys who would sing praises to God amid bleeding and painful wounds, locked in stocks and not escape, when God Himself provided their freedom? Are they delirious from the pain, or is there something we are not seeing? Paul and Silas valued the life of the jailer above their own. What has happened to this caliber of faith? Our culture’s prosperity has taken the heart of our faith from us. Materialism breeds selfishness, where we put ourselves first. What would it be worth if we were to assign a monetary amount to this kind of rock-solid faith? Could it even be calculated?

At times “good fortune” does befall us. We find extra money and say it must be the blessing of the Lord instead of turning it in. And why don’t we? We say, “oh they will just keep it for themselves, so I might as well keep it.” We fail to see that it is not about the money but who the money reveals who we are. Are we living for ourselves or the Lord? If it’s for the Lord, He seeks absolute integrity in all areas of life. We see Paul and Silas being so faithful to the Lord that even in pain they praise Him.

Paul and Silas were hurting from their whippings. Usually when we are in pain, we let everyone around us know it, and if we don’t do that, we are at least grumpy. They were neither, and their concern was not for themselves but for the jailer. Could we endure beatings for Him and then sing because our life is still blessed?

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Does our suffering change the truth of these verses? Our life has seasons, seasons of testing, and seasons of blessings, yet it all serves to make us men or women of God. The manufacturing of tempered steel is the process of extreme heating and cooling, making it stronger. This is required for beams that span bridges or make skyscrapers. The steel must be tempered to withstand the strain it will undergo. As we persevere, steel is being put into our souls. Just as our souls (our structure) undergo life, we are “heated and cooled” (trials and blessings) to the end that we become able and strong. Our structure, unlike the bridge or skyscraper, is Eternal. Our faith brings us closer to Him (which is His goal) and makes us a stronger witness of His Life in us, which should be our goal.

The problem we have is our culture’s mindset toward suffering. If we are struggling, having hassles, in pain, or having problems at work, something must be wrong; we can’t be blessed. Now, if we are being stupid and making poor choices, we are bringing it on ourselves, but if we are living for Christ, then we ARE blessed even though times are tough. We must break away from the American philosophy that says suffering is bad or that we did something wrong. Just like Job’s friends wrongly accused him of sinning because of his suffering. Jesus says…

Matthew 5:10

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

We are blessed because suffering is the stamp that the Spirit of God is upon us, working righteousness through suffering. Suffering also causes us to focus more intently on our daily decisions and cast out anything with no eternal value. We are pushed into making the right choices; who will we live for? Will our decisions be based on instant gratification or something more long-term, our flesh or the Kingdom? If we choose wisely, then choosing the Kingdom is a great trade-off; the infinite and its glorious beauty for the finite that will end.

Here are some cool promises:

Deuteronomy 28:9

The LORD shall establish thee a holy people unto himself( this is what God has always wanted), as he hath sworn unto thee if thou shalt keep — the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.

Deuteronomy 28:13-14

And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearkens unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command — thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

We don’t have gods of wood and stone; no, we are much more sophisticated. Our gods come in money, steel cars, homes, and flesh. The more you walk with Christ, the more you realize how much the values of this life are just illusions. Promises of happiness and contentment are fleeting. Our needs are spiritual and can only be satisfied by Christ. Once you gain your “spiritual sight,” you begin to see the illusion that humanity is under. Something that we may be going through right now may hurt, but if it causes me to see the truth by praying more and searching out promises in God’s Word (like I just shared), then is it really hurting me? It is helping to drive God’s Word deeper inside of me and drive worldly values out of me, giving me my spiritual sight.

Exodus 15:2

The LORD is my strength and song, (e.g., Paul and Silas), and He has become my salvation: He is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation ( in my soul), ….and I will exalt him.

Exodus 15:26

If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for — I am the LORD that healeth thee.

I think it’s time that we take our Christian Faith and our Savior seriously. He makes many promises to us, read Duet. 28.

My favorite passage on trusting God is found in Daniel.

Daniel 3:16-18

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar ( the world ruler at the time), we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.

If it be so, our God whom we serve can deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

I’ve shared this verse before and what I love about their faith is whether God acts on their behalf or not, they will not bow. God is free to do what He will do, but my response to a situation is not based on The Lord saving me or making my life easier; it’s based on the fact that He is worthy of my allegiance. We must become like these young men and like Job. That is why these men saw Christ in the fire, and Job was so praised by God. Their devotion to God was not based on favorable circumstances; the circumstances did not add or take away from their devotion to God. Amen.

1 Peter 4:12-14

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you?

But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Can we become like these men? Not having the Holy Spirit or being born again, their fear and respect of God are amazing.

Amen

Father,

Make us tempered sons and daughters who can bear the weight of life’s trials and hardship and hold Your Glory and display it with humility and praise. Make Your church, your Bride, beautiful and battle ready, I pray.

Amen

Thank you,

Arthur

The Goodness of the Lord – November 2021

Watch the video introduction to my message here:

Learn more about getting closer to Jesus in my book:

Psalms 103:1-5

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity,

who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.

Do you think that through the day in and day out of everyday life, we forget how blessed we are? I think so, and from time to time, we need a check on our attitude. To be reminded of how good we have it is important. It has nothing to do with our finances, our station in life, or whether we had a good day, week, or month, though obviously, those things help. God’s approach to us, His love for us, and His willingness to be a part of every day are not dependent upon our circumstances. His Grace to us is outside of everyday circumstances.

We need to learn how to live from Heaven to earth, how He views people and us in general, and then become His representatives; everything changes. It may sound like pie in the sky type stuff, but it’s not. A grateful attitude based on God’s goodness and His promises carries one through life regardless of our position and or circumstances. Granted, this takes some maturing, but it definitely is not “pie in the sky theology,.” It’s a real everyday truth that we can grow into.

Circumstances can be incredibly challenging, but they need not steal our joy or the blessing that is unique to believers. Remember this saying, a Big God equals small problems, but a small God equals big problems. So based on that, how big is your God? How we live life and respond to our challenges and problems answers this question. The problems and challenges are the same; whether God is big or small is what changes.

Take Paul, for instance; he had it super tough, some would say impossible. How could God let him go through so much hardship, yet he doesn’t complain. Paul represents some serious boots on the ground (as in military) tougher than anybody I know; has anyone been shipwrecked (3x’s), whipped (five sessions of forty lashes less one) (forty times was considered a death sentence), stoned once, and beaten with rods three times (2 Corinthians 11:16-33). I don’t think so, yet he still found reason to rejoice.

Philippians 4:11-13

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

How important it is to learn this lesson. It is so against our nature. We don’t want to suffer need, or pain, or lack. Yet without these trials, how would we learn that in “every circumstance to be content?” To learn the secret of being content in plenty or lack and be able to do all things does not come without hardship. Imagine the freedom we would have and the strength of character if we could mature to this point. That we truly lived from Heaven to Earth. Paul’s life was one trial after another, but the presence of the Spirit made it more than worth it. Many of us are willing to travel on the road of victory, yet the road of trial and testing prepares us. Without that, our pride and ego would destroy us. Ultimately, the question is how close do we want to be with Jesus, “to know Him as we are known,” is that our goal? It’s a fair question, and it measures how much of our comfort we value versus how close we want to be to Jesus.

If anyone had a “right” to be discouraged or complain, it would have been Paul. Sometimes life has to get really scary or threatening for us to really dive deep into our faith. In so doing, God creates a whole new platform of depth and strength in us. As our relationship goes deeper, we find Him and the strength we need. The severity of the circumstances causes us to see how really needy we are of Him and how inexhaustible is His strength and peace. During intense periods as these, what happens? If we are meditating on the Word and in prayer, we find the peace that passes understanding. I noticed that though my stomach is tense, my heart is calm. It’s like two people living instead of me. The flesh is the flesh; it won’t change; I’ve learned to ignore it. In these times of severe testing, it was like He was digging a deeper well in me. It was the struggle that He used to take me deeper. After I gave each crew their assignments and dismissed them, I would spend about forty-five minutes to an hour in prayer until I felt His peace.

The reality of His presence and peace grew in me, and as that grew, my confidence grew, and the crushing trial became bearable and then defeat-able. I matured; after several long and hard years, instead of being the victim, I became the victor as I saw my prayers answered. The Lord daily prayed through me and interceded on my behalf. None of this would I have known if it were not for the pain. He met me with His peace, comfort, and strength. And if it were not for the severity of the trial, I would have never pressed into Him so hard. He is every bit who He says He is and more, and hence one becomes “baptized” into the Lord’s presence. Much like the lamb that wanders into unknown danger, the Shepherd has to break its legs and then carries the lamb around his neck till the legs heals. Once healed, the lamb never again wanders, now becoming accustomed to the presence of the Shepherd. In His presence, we gain understanding, peace, joy, and confidence. Then when life gets hard, it’s not a question do I go to the Lord for help or not; it is instinctual having our faculties attuned to Him. Nothing but good comes from the humbling process. Even in the midst of chaos, there is a steady calm. There’s a cool verse in Psalm 103

Psalms 103:7

He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.

The word “ways” means to walk or a path. Through the trials that Moses experienced, he found God walking with Him; as a friend. Therefore Moses did not fear. Israel only saw God’s acts, but they never knew His ways, so they doubted, feared, and complained. Oftentimes we are like that. If we do not run from the hardship but rather to Him in the hardship, we will know His ways. Experiencing the Lord’s goodness makes a person confident, able to face trial and or hardship. His goodness also changes you, making you enjoyable and pleasant to be around. People think I’m a nice guy etc., that it’s to my credit, but it’s not. It’s Him in me and me learning that with Him, I am more than a conqueror.

Romans 8:37-39

No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us, for I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Throughout history, every conqueror eventually gets conquered, not so with the believer. If we make Christ our prize, there is no might in Hell that can separate us from Him. Also, His definition of a conqueror is different than ours. For us, it could be many different things we seek to conquer, but ultimately they are things that benefit us here. In Christ’s world, the value system is different. He did not pay a supreme price to benefit our life here, though walking with Him is a huge benefit. His focus was and is to destroy the bondage of sin so we could conquer it and forever be His Bride. I repeat this truth many times through different examples and stories to help us change our mindset. To live life from Heaven’s perspective to earth, not from earth’s perspective to Heaven. So much of our frustration with our faith is because we have the latter mindset. Nothing is more important to Him than to redeem us (buy us back) from this life. So if it’s painful, so be it; it’s worth the pain. It reorients our thinking back to Christ’s thinking. Easy doesn’t grow faith, just like sitting on the couch doesn’t grow muscles. We need weights, resistance, repetition to grow muscles, and frustration, difficulty, and setbacks to grow faith.

Matthew 6:25-27

Do Not Be Anxious

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

Jeremiah 29:11-13

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (a Great King is worthy of no less)

I think there are times we take God for granted. We need to repent of that attitude and give Him the respect He deserves. He’s only saved our soul for Eternity).

What is the composition of a positive attitude then? Is it just personality or things going my way? Is it based on temporal things, or is it deeper? The man who built his house on the sand was feeling pretty good when he finished, especially looking over at his neighbor, who was working so hard to get his posts anchored into the rock. He probably thought it was a lot of needless work for nothing, and since he had beachfront property, he probably took the rest of the summer off to enjoy life. Or just like the farmer who got a bumper crop and told his soul to “eat, drink and be merry.” However, when the storms in life come, and they do, these people are the first to fall apart.

What provides the greatest foundation for an enduring positive attitude? Is it not understanding our value before God? Are you not of more value than they?” Jesus said to the disciples when he talked about how the Father provided for the common bird, and if He took so much care to provide for a commonest of His creatures, will He not provide for those who are made in His image? So why does faith fail? It fails because we do not understand our value before Him; and why do we not understand our value before Him, because we do not spend enough time in His presence.

There is no substitute for time in His presence. Let your day be structured around your time with God. As I’ve mentioned, my Bible study time during the workweek is my lunch, even if lunch is at 5 pm. During the weekend, it’s exercise, breakfast, and then my time with the Lord. Exercising is my prayer time and ensures that I give the Lord my best “alertness.” Again, a Great King deserves our very best.

He has given us many promises about our worth and value to Him. If you do not know them, that is why you struggle as a believer. You need to know them. Rehearse and memorize them until they settle deep inside of you. Write them on sticky notes and put them on your mirror as you are shaving or putting makeup on, or on the dashboard of your car or on your desk at work, and make a point of reading them multiple times throughout the day. And if you’re in a pinch and can’t remember them, then just picture Jesus hanging on the Cross hearing His words, “Father forgive them for they no not know what they do.” If that’s not value, I do not know what is. Do we really think that after giving His life for us that He will abandon us or do us wrong?

Our faith, that which anchors our soul, like the post in the rock, is where our strength comes from. Our smile and hope come from truly understanding His sacrifice. His obedience to the Father to go to the Cross and take our penalty and suffer our shame. Now pray that God makes it real and personal for you, and let’s go out and live in that confidence knowing that no force formed against us can defeat us.

Isaiah 54:10

For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

We understand God’s promises from our perspective, from a worldly understanding. However, God made these promises from His perspective. The biggest problem God has had was when man sinned, and He became separated from His prize creation. I’ve experienced that sense of separation. My oldest daughter left home at 18 under very unfavorable circumstances, and I knew she was not ready. I knew the world’s values would overtake her, and within less than a year, she was a mess. I cried for three years during this time, praying daily for her. Victory eventually came, but it was hard-fought.

When Christ atoned for man’s sin, God put an end to this separation forever for them that would so choose, “though the mountains may depart and the hills be removed (which would be horrendous), yet my steadfast love shall not depart,” not now, not never…” in that single, but most powerful act lies our hope and confidence.

I’m sad for the believer who is so busy being lukewarm that he or she doesn’t know how rich of an inheritance they have. Trading their Godly inheritance and birthright for a “bowl of soup,” like Esau did ( Genesis 29). It’s like going through life blind. You will run into a lot of things that you don’t need to. In this same relational context, God has made this promise.

Isaiah 54:17

no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from me, declares the LORD ( memorize these two most powerful verses).”

God is the Eternal Judge, His judgment echos through all of Eternity past, present, and future, and there is no judgment, weapon, or tongue that overrides His Eternal power or decrees (Amen).

King David, Israel’s most Godly King, had many serious struggles, but he was able to overcome them by strengthening himself in the Lord. Let’s read what happened (pretty serious) and see what action he took, knowing that we could and should do the same (at the time, he was only 22-23).

1 Samuel 30:3-6

And when David and his men came to the city (Ziklag), they found it burned with fire, and their wives and sons and daughters were taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep. David’s two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

It is so important that daily we make our relationship with the Lord our top priority. We never know when we will be facing a crisis. We want to have that depth and confidence in The Lord so we too “can strengthen ourselves.”

1 Samuel 30:7-8

And David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. And David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I pursue after this band? Shall I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue.”

What David did was reserved for the priest, taking the ephod. It was the priest’s duty to inquire of the Lord and wear the ephod, a breastplate vest with 12 stones, each stone representing a tribe of Israel. David took this upon himself. He wanted to hear from God, and because of the closeness he had developed over the years as a shepherd boy, he had the confidence to come before the Lord. And the Lord honored him by answering him, proving that relationship was more important than rules, even if the rules were God’s.

When times are tough, we need to go back to the very character of God. His faithfulness and love and encourage us from there. As David continued as King, he wrote many Psalms. Psalm 103, the one listed above, is about the Lord’s goodness, something that does us well to be reminded of.

Psalms 103:1-5

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity,

who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

How important it is to take inventory of the benefits we receive because of God’s faithfulness. We forget, especially when going through difficulties. Recently my mom passed (9/22/2021), and we had her memorial on 9/14. Everything is still pretty fresh, and it doesn’t take long before a lump develops in my throat, but I call to mind that she is with the Lord, and the lump goes away. As I think about her, it’s as if I can hear her talk to me about Heaven.

Oh stop that nonsense of being sad for me, I’m home and free from that crippled body. Wait mijo (son) till you see the Throne and how God’s Glory fills and warms all of Heaven and beyond. He is beyond human words to describe and His presence radiates a love that units us all in perfect harmony. Heaven’s life is the life He intended for humanity until humanity sinned and life deformed into something He never intended it to be. The Sin was great, therefore the cure had to be greater. The Cross, A Strong Remedy for the defilement of disobedience. In Heaven, one sees what life was intended to be. I am so anxious to have you and all that love Jesus come and see what I now see but could have only imagined in my earthly temple. Love you mijo, stay strong.”

Boy, I’m choking back the tears. To hear my mom’s voice in my head is pretty special. I will leave her words as I heard them, and you can make your own opinion. So a very strong reminder of David’s Word,

We were never designed to allow fear, anxiety, insecurity to rule in us. That in itself can bring on sickness. It does not mean we are not saved; it only means we do not comprehend how great a salvation we have. We were designed to have Christ govern us, and the closer we get to that, the healthier we will be, physically, emotionally, and mentally. So when Jesus said to us, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness and all these things shall be added to you,” this is much more than just a religious statement. That statement brings health and wholeness to all aspects of our humanity, Spirit, soul, and body. And let’s not make “all these things being added” the motive for seeking Him. That would be wrong, making the gift more important than the Giver of that gift. It is in relationship with Him that we best enjoy, thrive and steward His gifts.

However, things do happen, and we can get discouraged and sidetracked. We can allow the disappointments of life to sidetrack us from Him, and then worry, fear, anxiety replaces the peace and joy that is ours by inheritance. As such, life then becomes more difficult. We feel we have to fight for every victory, whereas if we were walking with Christ, we would understand we already have the victory; we just need to stand in it. We fight from a position of victory, not for the victory. That is such a huge shift in our paradigm/thinking; how could that not affect everything we do? It would bring us such strength and confidence at every level.

“Who heals all your diseases.” Healing is a gift of the Spirit, and it is best received in corporate prayer (James 5:14). And there are pastors that have this gift. Sometimes healing doesn’t occur, but it is never because He doesn’t love or care for us. That question was completely and thoroughly answered at the Cross. The greatest healing was done at the Cross; every healing thereafter is to be received with thanksgiving and joy. If healing does not occur, we are to remain joyful, for the relationship we’ve been privileged to receive far outlast any other thing that we would seek from Him. The enemy always wants to slander God, making us think that He does not love or care. If that’s you, you are allowing a temporal thing to interfere with your eternal reward. If God never answered another prayer but granted you forgiveness and Eternal Life and His Holy Spirit, would that be enough, or would you need more? Maybe the healing we really need is our attitude, and the pain is bringing to the surface the shallowness of our faith. Our “me focus” attitude is hurting us. Check yourself and repent if that is you, and be more appreciative of the blessings we have. Also, be mindful of worrying and fretting; those are the concerns of orphans. You are far from that if you are truly in Christ. That in itself could bring healing.

** Also, since God is a relational God, maybe He refrains from healing because He knows that we would stop seeking Him? We would lose our earnestness in seeking Him and get busy with life, especially if now in our painful state, we struggle with reading the Bible. Pain, as much as we don’t like it, makes us more conscious of our need for Him. We need pain, lack, fear to some extent, challenges, etc., to keep us humble and to build faith muscle. Pride destroys our walk with God, and we all have it; humility, the antithesis to pride, is helped through the challenges of life. Like what Paul said,

If when pain arises, we would pray in earnestness until we sense His peace over the matter and not fill any less loved or cared for. That is how I have received most of my healings. TO BE UNSTOPPABLE. I don’t expect anything, He’s already done everything. If He chooses to answer and heal, that’s wonderful. (Bethel Church in Redding, Ca. is one such church that operates in the gift of physical healing. Bill Johnson is the senior pastor and gives great messages on all topics, but very strong in healing).

Two supreme lessons are represented in the next sets of verses. To learn these two is to be more than a conqueror.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited (he learned that as he sought the Lord about his pain). Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Psalms 103:1-5

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity,

who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

Jesus said that Satan has nothing in me, that there was nothing in Christ that had or made any agreement with satan, or the ways of the flesh. I want us to be able to say the same (John 14:30). God’s Word is God’s Word, I may not always understand it, but that does not make it any less true. It is always true, and as I grow in its fullness, I come to understand.

I don’t define it, it defines me. Amen

Father God,

May this study be our Thanksgiving unto You, for as your truth frees us, we are more freer individuals, and to know the Truth it truly does set us free from the shackles and fears of this life.

Thank you so much,

Your sons and daughters

Why We Pray Part 2 – November 2021

Welcome to part II of “Why We Pray.” In review of Part I, there was two major points. One, the Lord commands us “to pray without ceasing (as discussed in part 1)” and two, it’s through this process plus scripture reading that the Holy Spirit is able to make us more like Jesus.

Sanctification, the process of being set apart unto Holiness, is the word we use to describe the workings of the Holy Spirit in us. It is interesting, as sanctification is forward motion, creation is likewise. Nothing in creation holds still. There are processes that are continually happening, like photosynthesis in trees or plants. If nothing is happening in God’s world of Creation, then it usually means it is ill, dying, or dead. Life has to happen because God is LIFE. Sanctification is that process of life where His Holy Spirit seeks to deepen Himself in us, convicting us of our need for Him. Without His promptings and wrestling, we would have no hope of Eternal Life.

Therefore the word sanctification is a cool word. It sounds holy, “I am being sanctified,” a holier than thou feel to it, but it is just the opposite. Its intended outcome is to make me holy, but getting to that is not easy. It is a never-ending process in which God continually wrestles with my sinful nature. Sanctification exposes the secrets in our heart, things that we feel we have a “right too.” There are things that people repeatedly do that annoy us or make our job more difficult, but do their actions annoy Jesus? I don’t think so. His even temper with the disciples proves He has much patience and Grace with us. However, these situations are as unpleasant as they are part of our classroom in sanctification.

James 1:2-4

Testing of Your Faith

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

The Master uses these situations to see if we can stay focused on being His light. Can “we count it all joy,” or do we lose our cool forgetting that we are His ambassador to that person or in that situation. Pushing our buttons, then stepping on our buttons until we either give up, giving it over to the Lord, or we just walk away from our testimony and insist on our right(s). What the Holy Spirit wants to teach us in these situations is perspective. You or I have not been called to represent our wants, but His. Can we do that even when things don’t seem fair? I don’t think it was fair that the Lord bore my sins or yours, but he did and didn’t complain. He did what the Father asked him to do. Can we do the same?

Father forgive me for losing my cool. I can not allow this offense to come between You and I, and getting angry breaks my fellowship with You; help me to walk through it with your Grace and perspective. Let your light shine in me, especially in these situations so that my ambassadorship fully and clearly represents the place from which I was sent, and the person who has sent me (we are to live from Heaven to earth, as an ambassador represents his or her country to the people to which they were sent. For we are Christ’s ambassadors 2 Cor 5:20).”

We have a great example of this button pushing process with Mary and Martha.

Luke 10:38-40

Martha and Mary

Now, as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but (only)one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (despite the hardship we may find in this life, nothing can take His presence from us. In fact the greater the trial, the greater is His presence).

Jesus came, and Mary stopped what she was doing. Everything could wait. Her heart hungered to hear the words of the Lord. Martha, on the other hand, derived her sense of self-worth through the action of serving until this action became too overwhelming, at which point she cried out, upset at her sister and feeling that Jesus didn’t care about her. Just the opposite was true. Jesus allowed this button-pushing process to bring Martha to this point to teach her that something more important than serving was here. It could all wait. She needed to develop within her that Jesus was first, period. If Jesus needed to, He could miraculously create a great meal for everyone. Words of Eternal Life always far exceed whatever we are doing. So let’s ask the question, how’s your Bible study? Are your prioritizing it, or are you too busy serving in one fashion or another, from self to others?

Another way to understand this is to use our relationships. When you love someone, you want to spend time with them. It’s something you want to do, and hence the relationship deepens. Unfortunately, on God’s end, He is way more in love with us than we are with Him. Note in scripture how God is always inviting us to know Him. We have verses that say, seek ye first, come now, let us reason together, pray, seek, knock, ask, etc. He is ever inviting us into a relational journey as His sons and daughters. It’s crazy that He seeks us so. We say “he’s got it bad,” when a guy has a hard crush on a girl. God has it bad for us, hence the Cross. We have a cute saying, “to know me is to love me,” and that cannot be any more true than it is for Christ Himself. That’s why He asks us to pray and to seek Him. He loves us and wants us to get to know Him. As we get to know Him more, we too grow more in love with Him as His love for us grows in us.

So in review, this is the foundation of part 1, though much more was said. Here is one of many verses that captures this passionate, relationship-oriented God of ours. Why is this important to know? When you understand His heart, then the willingness to sacrifice, surrender, obey and follow is much more readily done.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

In Part 2, we want to go back to the garden, then to Peter’s denial of the Lord; did Peter have to sin? In other words, was he predestined to deny the Lord, was the task ahead of him too great for him? And then do we, as Peter, faced with equal taunting challenges, have to succumb as well? Or said differently, are we predisposed to sinning, is God’s Grace not sufficient? Jesus gave Peter a command which indicates that Peter had another choice. First, though, let’s define sin. The Bible uses two words for sin, transgression, and iniquity. In Psalm 51, David is confessing his sin with Bathsheba, and he uses both these words.

Psalms 51:3-5

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight so that you may be justified in your words

and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Iniquity and transgression are words used to describe sin. As we study both these words, we learn that they describe “missing the mark,” which is the generic definition for sin found in the word harmatia. Its root definition comes from archery, where the archer pulls the bow but misses the mark, the bull’s eye. However, these two words are vastly different in describing the mode or the reason for the sin. David uses “iniquity” as the plight of our fallen nature; we are sinners from birth. We, by nature, will fail. Fail in patience, fail in kindness, fail in forgiving, we will not have the right emotions and often have to “settle down.” All aspects of our fallen nature. However, “transgression” speaks of a will, a choice to sin, and David uses that word to describe his sexual relationship with Bathsheba, a married woman.

Psalms 51:1-5

Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God

TO THE CHOIRMASTER. A PSALM OF DAVID, WHEN NATHAN THE PROPHET WENT TO HIM, AFTER HE HAD GONE IN TO BATHSHEBA

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight

so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Iniquity practiced leads to transgression, though people will use terminology such as, “I just fell into it,” as if they had no choice. By so saying, they are indicating they were more a victim than a person exercising free will. However, this is not true. Like the saying, “if you stand for nothing, you will fall for everything.” So was Peter “predisposed” to give in to his carnal nature, or did he simply not take the escape route provided for him? And if it’s true for Peter, could it also be true for us? Again the question is not whether God can use our failure for good because we know He can and does, but did he or do we have to sin? What does God’s Word say?

1 Corinthians 10:12-14

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Where was Peter’s way of escape? This next statement should utterly and completely testify to the importance of prayer. Let’s go to the garden where Jesus had His final words with His disciples.

Matthew 26:37-41

And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch( pray) with me.” And going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may NOT ENTER into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Luke’s account is found in 22:39-46

And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in (great) agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may NOT ENTER into temptation ( there are two words for agony, both are filled with much emotion and fear. One trembles and runs, the other trembles in the face of the issue yet continues on to the end, hence the great drops of blood. His wrestling with taking the sins of the world upon him was beyond his humanness, thus needing strengthening from the angel. My words can not even do justice to what our Lord experienced).

So we know the rest of the story; the disciples feared and fled. Peter followed to see what would happen to Jesus but in so doing exposed himself to a sin that he had no power or Grace to overcome, for he had not prayed. Understanding that as cruel as Christ’s crucifixion was, it was ordained by God, and Peter could not stop it but needed to accept it. By not heeding or accepting Christ’s words, Peter ended up denying knowing Jesus 3 times. Only John followed Jesus to the Cross. How important is prayer? How seriously do you take your walk with Christ? Prayer to the spirit man is as important as the air we breathe, as the water we drink. Without prayer, our lives would be powerless.

So how is your walk with Christ? Are you overcoming life’s trials or being defeated by them? The world is changing, and the last thing we want is to be a weak Believer. If it becomes illegal to be a Christian, will you stand for your faith? The agenda of the left is aggressive against our faith, but it’s not necessarily right versus left but a spiritual blinding of the eyes and heart that encompasses both groups. Personal rights and our freedom to choose seem to be eroding as legislation is being enacted, taking away more freedoms. Prayer needs to become a focus and a refuge of strength. Here’s one of David’s prayers.

Psalms 5:1-3

Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning.

Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God,

for to you do I pray. O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;

in the morning, I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

There was a Christian band in my twenties that sang Psalm 5 and a lead lyric was “In the morning you will hear my prayer Oh Lord.” There is something about setting time aside prior to work, school, etc., where you come before the Lord, acknowledge Him, and seek His Presence. If you wait till the day gets going, it’s like you are playing catch up. Leaving home with your armor on and a full tank of gas (“Holy Spirit Premium”) is how one stays victorious.  Peter failed because he failed to pray. Let that sink in. We are to put on the armor of the Spirit. Read Ephesians 6 and the commentaries on the armor so you can receive the benefit of the teaching.

Psalms 5:7-8

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.

I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you.

Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies;

make your way straight before me. Amen (a great prayer).

I love these words of David, all of them. Acknowledge God’s love regardless of what the day looks like. Holy Reverence, as I approach my Loving Dad. In full confidence of His care. I love what Proverbs 3:5-12 says;

Proverbs 3:5-12

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce;

then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.

My son, do not despise the LORD’S discipline or be weary of his reproof,

for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.

**Crisis brings us into a deeper relationship with the Lord and shows us our need for Him as we need to dig deeper to overcome the fear, challenges, bad news, and seemly the bad events that happen to us, etc. We need to see that God is still bigger and able and willing to keep His promises. And because He is, we can have hope in the crisis and find that His hope can sustain us through it, and without Him, we are in despair – no different than others.

I wonder if being a Christian today carried a death sentence, as it has in the past, how many of us would fall away? Or what if the penalty was a jail sentence or meager employment? IS THERE A POINT THAT WE WOULD DENY HIM? I sincerely hope not. We cannot trade the pain of today for tomorrow’s Eternity. Sometimes drastic actions from others or the government illicit in us a do-or-die faith, emergency type faith, and we stand our ground. However, what if it’s not drastic but gradual bleeding from white to grey, and before long, black does not look so bad. Can we maintain and EXCEL in a society that ever so persuasively sells values and ideals that are contrary to our faith? Most of the time, the hero in us is not needed as much as the athlete that daily wakes up and seeks to exceed yesterday’s goal.

We have issues in our society that the scriptures are very clear on. Infidelity, homosexuality, fornication, drunkenness, dishonesty, etc., Galatians 5 list’s the works of the flesh.

Galatians 5:17-21

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity( homosexuality), sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do(practice) such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

“I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

People really dislike being told what to do when it comes to moral issues, “everyone does what they feel is right in their own eyes.” Yet what kind of God would the Lord be if upon going to Heaven He said, “I’m so sorry, you did not live a righteous enough life to come here.” And we said, “You never told me, and in reply, He said, I’m sorry about that too.” How would you feel? I know I would feel like I was never given a chance to decide, that my Eternal Destiny was decided without me. I would feel cheated. Thankfully that is not even close; from Jesus’ prophesied birth to His purpose, to the Cross, to the disciples who continued in Christ’s message, to the Bible that teaches and instructs us in His ways, God has done everything to give us an opportunity to know Him. There will not be one person on judgment day that can say anything against Him. Therefore it is imperative that when our lifestyle doesn’t line up with scripture that instead of getting angry as if God does not love us, or that the Bible is not relevant, that we see it from God’s view, “for God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whosesoever would believe in Him

“and repent of their ways” would not perish but have everlasting life ( John 3:16). The “do not do” in scripture is no different than a parent telling their children to not play in the street, or swim without supervision, etc.. The commands are given to protect us, so we flourish and given from a heart of love.

What did Joshua say to the nation of Israel as he retired from his post as Israel’s leader, ”

Joshua 24:14-15

“Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

This is the path forward regardless of what tragedies befall us. Will you choose it?

Father God,

How many times have you been blamed for our tragedies, yet these tragedies or failures of ours are not your doing. We ignore Your command to pray and read Your Word and hence do not have the power to stand, as Peter did not have it and denied You. You also have taught us that satan is the ruler of this planet, and he comes to “steal, kill and destroy,” so his hand is clearly seen in the tragedies that are ever-present, but so unlike satan You have come to give us life and an Eternal Hope. Thank you for your Word, that if read insulates and protects us from the enemy’s lies and deceitful ways helping us to stand as your ambassador. Amen.

Thank You for being such a Good and Faithful Father,

We love You. :)

Why We Pray – October 2021

1 Thessalonians 5:16-19

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.

Can we quench the Spirit by not praying, by not giving thanks or rejoicing? I think so, but how? When our circumstances or problems prevent us or keep us from rejoicing, praying, or giving thanks, then our problems have become bigger than God’s, and in so doing, we quench the Spirit. Think of dumping water on a fire and quenching the fire; we do the same with the Lord when circumstances become bigger than Him. Lack of faith always quenches the Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely (open your eyes and heart to see that through the hardship sanctification, “the making of holiness” is occurring) and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at(till) the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

These verses remind me of what a rock tumbler does to jagged rocks. After a certain and prolonged period of time, the once jagged rocks are now shiny, smooth, and beautiful. That’s exactly what the Father wants to do in us, make us beautiful inside, so outwardly we reflect His person. We are to be a light in the darkness, a city on a hill with the beauty of His Truth, Love, and Grace shining out from us.

What happens when we pray without ceasing?

He or she is different from a believer who does not or prays minimally. The one who prays carries the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the more often we pray, the greater is His presence. I find two types of prayer. The first one is based on Proverbs 3:5&6.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

I stop all that I’m doing, kneel and pray. I acknowledge my way before Him and my need for Him. I do this before I start my day or before I start a new event, “in all my ways.” This is probably the most common type of prayer. The other, and more frequent for me, is an ongoing inner communion with the Lord that allows me to pray while driving, working, in a trial, etc. The best way to describe it is like having a phone conversation, and we never hang up. I hear Him, He hears me, and when I’m not talking to Him, e.g., working on an estimate, answering emails, or talking with clients or my men, I know that He’s there just listening. It has not always been like this. Earlier in my walk, it was the first example.

Depending on the concern, it could be a lengthy prayer or a shorter one, but we hung up. I walked away strengthened and encouraged, but through the course of the week, I felt Him lessening in me and realized I needed to get connected to Him again. Scripturally this is not true, we are “always” connected, but just like a car gets low on gas and needs to be refueled, I felt the same way. I would sense my “tank” on low and would need to “fuel up” again. I didn’t like that. I needed to re-dial and touch bases with Him again. This “always connected” that I experience now is something that He has done in me. It’s such a blessing, but at the same time, it is also the years that I have been in His Word. I always have lunch, which is when I read; even if lunch is at 5 in the afternoon, I have it. When you are tired of who you are and tired of doing things your way, you tend to stay close, very close—King David’s prayer models what I just said.

Psalms 5:1-3

Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning (my absence of Him, or as I am being molded into His image via the trials, I groan)

Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God,

for to you do I pray. O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;

in the morning, I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch (to watch implies expectation or confidence in whom you spoke with).

Psalms 5:7-8

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.

I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you ( my response to His Holiness and love)

Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies,

make your way straight before me ( this is a righteous prayer as His son or daughter).

“In the fear of You,” and “watch” are critical parts of our walk with Him. We can never lose this. In fact, we must grow in reverence and watching for Him. He must ever be getting bigger in us, and we are getting smaller. Why, because as He gets bigger and I get smaller, what else happens? My problems and trials become smaller as they become overshadowed by His GREATNESS. I long for a time where His greatness is such that parting the “Red Sea,” would be just a normal day. “Well of course, that is just what He does” rather than, did you see that!

Psalms 5:11-12

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy;

spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.

For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.

These verses represent the journey of the believer. Trials and hardships and how we are to deal with them. Waiting, patience, trusting, and acknowledging who it is I’m praying to, “My King and my God.” The Christian life is one of total dependency upon Him from our work life to our home life—one continuous walk. There is no time that I say, “I got this God, I can handle it,” NEVER! In this walk of great Grace, I like to repeatedly acknowledge and thank Him for His love, guidance, and lastly, His joy. At times, His Joy doesn’t make sense in light of the problems we deal with, but simply put, “He’s Always Greater.”

1 Peter 1:3-7

Born Again to a Living Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

If we are living for this world, then there is not much consolation. However, if our hope is in Christ, then 1 Peter brings much joy. None of us know the future, but suffering in one form or another is definitely part of the picture, and we can’t fear suffering. Daniel didn’t fear the lion’s den; he could have avoided it by simply not praying to the Lord. Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego could have avoided the fiery furnace if they had just bowed to Nebuchadnezzar’s idol, but they refused to. The consequences didn’t sway them or Daniel. In both cases, God delivered these men, and society was changed. We will always be delivered, either from the trial or grow through the trial. I am confident that as Jesus interceded for Peter, He intercedes for us as well.

Luke 22:31-32

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

Peter was going to have a rude awakening. This is a great example of the permissibility of God allowing satan to affect a necessary end, which was the crushing of Peter’s identity and ego—allowing someone who He loved to be utterly crushed so as to now rebuild him in humility and righteousness. I can attest to this crushing. It is so painful you become “damaged goods.” It can be for life unless you let the Lord begin to rebuild you. If you allow the lie of satan that says God has failed you or is punishing you, or worse yet does not love you despite the undeniable testimony of the Cross, you will struggle. And for years, you will live a defeated life and be miserable. Just like the Jews in the wilderness were.

I can tell by a Believer’s walk if they have become damaged goods or not. If they say, “I don’t have time to pray or read the Word etc.” they are either damaged goods or have not gone through the crushing of their ego yet. If they say, “Oh I wouldn’t miss a day,” they were damaged goods but are now being rebuilt. When you are being rebuilt, you don’t miss a day if you can help it. We start out as “God’s mess,” but through time and process, we become His workmanship. I am learning all the time to yield to His workings in us. The prayer I prayed in my earliest days was a very simple prayer, “if you want this mess, this mess desperately needs you,” Amen. If you have gone through this “damaged goods process,” then you understand what I mean. The destruction of the self is so complete that it never again arises to its pre- crushed status. When the carnal man attempts to take credit or find some action or deed to be prideful over or gloat about the colossal failure of the past only has to be recalled. Peter’s denial of Jesus was never too far from his thoughts.

This whole process reminds me of “throwing,” as in spinning clay on a potter’s wheel. It was one of my favorite classes. I learned to make bowls, pots, vases, etc. However, there was one aspect of working with clay that was critical regardless of what was going to be made. It was the least enjoyable part of it but was the most important. Before one could place the clay on the wheel, the clay had to be thrown multiple times through a wire that cuts the clay in half, called “clay wedging.” Each time that was done, I would look at each half of the clay for air pockets, and I continued to throw or wedge the clay until I saw no air pockets. It took time, especially if you got a bad batch of clay. However, imagine spending all afternoon creating a beautiful bowl for a friend or family member; you painstakingly shape it and then add your underglaze and begin the firing( putting it in the oven for hardening), and then in the process of firing, the bowl blows up! Why, because the clay wedging was rushed, and an air pocket remained. If the clay could talk, the most painful part would be the wedging. We are God’s clay, and the clay wedging He does to rid us of our “air pockets of pride and ego.” It is a most painful process but a very necessary one. Imagine what would have happened to Peter if this humbling experience had never happened? If in the process of God using him to heal people, raise the dead and preach the gospel, he would have blown up with pride. Ultimately he and the gospel would have failed. “Life Wedging” is painful, no doubt, but it keeps us from serious failure.

Let me ask an intimate and maybe painful question. Are you sidelined because of a failure? Do you carry your failures, and do they cause you to either consciously or subconsciously doubt God and hence to not seek Him? If this is you, then you also struggle with believing that He loves you. As soon as a pastor told me that, I immediately disagreed with him. I thanked him for his time, and we left. I figured the following day that after this failed marriage counseling session that Lisa was going to file for a divorce ( we were 3 yrs. married, now 42 yrs. Amen). On the drive home from Napa to Vacaville, about 45 minutes, the silence was deafening until the Lord broke the silence by simply saying, “you know he’s right.” His voice crumbled me. It was quiet, loving, but firm. There was no debating. Do you remember the story of Saul getting knocked off his horse and hearing the Lord say, “Saul, Saul why do you persecute me?” For three days, he neither ate nor drank. Do you ever wonder what he was thinking? I know because that was me. Thinking that I was absolutely right, serving the Lord with fervor, and then realizing that the most basic truth I didn’t even know, that He loved me. It was shattering, and I was broken inside. Hearing His voice and never knowing this about myself, along with all the struggles I put my wife through, was crushing. As painful as that was, that was my beginning of understanding His love for me. God was in this and was going to use this to change me.

From living and studying the scriptures so as to GAIN His approval to living and studying the scriptures BECAUSE OF HIS APPROVAL WAS A COMPLETELY different approach to LIFE. He has paved the way via the Cross, and in that way, I am already approved, forgiven, and loved. Such a huge change. I would liken it to a heart transplant, and now I understood and was set free from the constant need of having to prove my worth before Him. I finally had His peace, Amen.

It was a long ride home, and I’m not talking about arriving at our home, but reckoning with all the wrong I did and asking for forgiveness from a wife who could no longer feel, forgive, or believe was the hardest part. Her hope of ever having a marriage or a husband that loved her was gone. Her eyes were dead along with her soul, and I did that. Had God not met me that afternoon, filling me with His love (which gave me hope), I would not have had the ability to move forward. Peter needed that same hope, and Jesus was about to do that.

John 21:9-11

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.

John 21:15-19

Jesus and Peter

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you (the tense of love Peter used means “fond of you” not Agape, God’s love, the word that Jesus used) Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God. And after saying this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

End of story, no more self-pity or rehearsing his failure over and over in his mind. Peter had a job to do. His failure and my failure became the launching pad of our walk with Christ. The questioning of Jesus to Peter was necessary so that Peter would be honest with himself. If he truly loved Jesus, as he said, he would not have denied Him. Peter needed to see that he loved himself more. However, Peter will grow to truly love Jesus and one day will be more than willing to die for his Lord. The story has it that Peter was crucified upside down because he did not feel worthy of being crucified like his Lord.

There are many things to note in this dialogue between Jesus and Peter, but the most striking is despite Peter’s glaring failure and an overwhelming sense of unworthiness, his call did not change. We always want to minister or act from a position of worth, strength, and self-confidence. However, that is not how the King or His Kingdom works. God’s men and women do His work from a position of need or depletion that there is absolutely nothing in me or us that we bring to the table. We can only bring a yielded heart. He must fill it with His Holy Spirit if any good is to come from us.

All that comes from you or me comes because He chooses to use the foolish things of the world to confound the wise (foolish because we believe in a Crucified and Resurrected Savior, to the world that’s foolishness).

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Yet His truth is proven as we pray and seek Him. To not pray is akin to not breathing. As breathing or breathe is to our physical life, so is a prayer to our spirit man. It’s that critical. Our salvation was and is costly. Let’s not make it cheap. Let’s put forth the effort knowing that we are not saved by our works. It’s strictly by faith in the Cross of Christ However, by our choices and effort to deny the flesh, redemption and His work on the Cross is honored in us. Let us be men and women who honor what has been gifted to us. Amen

Father,

Thank you for the “life wedging of our soul.” It is most destructive to our carnal man, but it becomes the catalyst or the metamorphosis of our soul as it breaks out from the cocoon of the flesh into a NEW LIFE. If we have become damaged goods but have not come to You for healing, let’s now do so repenting of ever thinking you meant us harm or failed us in any way. If we are still trying to prove our self-worth to You, let us understand that that will only end in failure. You have called us to absolute Holiness, which is unattainable in our own strength. Let us humble ourselves before a MIGHTY, OMNIPOTENT BUT LOVING AND KIND GOD who wants nothing more in all the universe ( literally) than to dwell in us and go through life together as Your Word says. Amen.

Chuck Colson kept a plaque on his desk that read: “Faithfulness, not success.” Having climbed the heights of worldly success, he knew that nothing in this life could ultimately satisfy. Forced to reckon with how empty it all was, he encountered Jesus. As he wrote in his book Loving God;

“God doesn’t want our success; He wants us. He doesn’t demand our achievements; He demands our obedience. The kingdom of God is a kingdom of paradox, where through the ugly defeat of a cross, a holy God is utterly glorified. Victory comes through defeat; healing through brokenness; finding self through losing self.”

We will let Your Word have the last word.

James 4:4-10

Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. Amen

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

Mystery and Victory

I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

“O death, where is your victory?

O death, where is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

The Power of Praise Over Fear Part 3 – September 2021

Romans 8:28

And we know that ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE THAT ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD BECAUSE WE LOVE GOD, OR IS IT JUST THE EVENTS THAT MAKE SENSE TO US?

When my brother drowned, and I was in charge, my mom blamed me for his death, did that work out for good? When I got fired from my job, and I had a very young family to support, did that work out for good? When I did an extensive landscape job, and the client chose to only pay half of it, meaning he still owed me $40K and it was Christmas time, and I wondered if I would be able to give my employees their Christmas bonus, let alone their paychecks (this has happened twice to me, and both at Christmas) did that work out for good? Or the struggles we all face in our family, at times very painful, do they work out for good?

My mom, 90, recently fell and broke her pelvis, so I have been flying to Orange County on the weekends to care for her. Is that working out for good? And when my daughter’s to-be-fiance Matt, a police officer, while helping in a traffic situation on the freeway, was struck and killed by a drunk driver, did that work out for good? He does say “all things,” and to me, all means all, like in everything. Is it true? Let me give you only one answer on how God has interceded. Parker, my son-in-law, and a great one at that, and my daughter Jessica’s firstborn is a son, Austin. He’s all boy, and we love him so much. He was born on the same day and almost to the minute that Matt was killed. Who could coordinate a birth to coincide with death? From death bring life, from tears of grief bring tears of joy; only God can, only Him! He did it with Jesus, and He does it every time we are willing to put our limitations aside and put Him in charge so that He can bring His life into us (I can hardly type right now, I can’t see through my tears). His faithfulness is undisputed in my heart.

So the expression “ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD” is something that is an absolute truth. I’ve seen it and lived it. For some things, I’m still waiting to see His promise fulfilled, but I have no doubt that He’ll complete what He’s started. Most of the time, God has to completely remodel the “landscape” within our soul for us to be able to see His hand.

What He does reminds me of what we do in landscaping. We come in and basically remove everything and then start over, literally from the ground up. We enrich the existing soil with topsoil blend and till it in. God seeks to do the same via His truths. He deals with our sinful nature by giving us His truth and then brings trial and hardship so that His truth gets tilled into our souls. This process happens for the whole of our life, and if we do it in tandem (agreement) with Him, progress is seen more readily, and the trials that seek to bring righteousness to our soul have a greater purpose. The real question is, when life gets really painful, do we still believe God’s promise, or is it something that we just quote to others?

Without faith, we are no different than Israel. They wandered for forty years because they did not believe God. Yet God was clear with them. Through Moses, He told them they were GOING TO THE PROMISE LAND, therefore all the obstacles, lack of water, lack of food and facing hostile nations, etc., these were ALL obstacles to test their faith. They were going to conquer it all. However, they made the journey painful by their lack of faith and ultimately disqualified themselves because of it. They would have conquered had they believed. God said they were going to the promised land, period. We have obstacles today where we need to believe God, and there are believers today that remain immature in Christ; they are continually doubting God. Therefore they never enter into a life of peace and joy walking in harmony with God’s Spirit. By now, they should be teachers.

Hebrews 5:12-14

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

1 Corinthians 3:1-3

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, — neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as “mere” men?

Only the Lord can look at us and say, you are here spiritually, but you should be here. Only He knows us, our strengths, our weaknesses, and will always have the proper expectation. It is so easy to compare ourselves to others and either feel superior to them or be intimidated, but it is not for us to say. Our only role “Is to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matt. 6:33),” and within each command is given the ability to fulfill it when our faith is added to His promise. And adding faith to His promise is not automatic. We need to go after it, “seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be open.” In Greek, it is written in the present imperative, keep seeking and keep knocking. We must take these scriptures and pray them into our lives and claim them; do battle, but its there for us to “pull them down,” from Heaven from a Father whose is wanting well-trained sons and daughters who know how to conquer and inherit the promised land, the land that exists in each of us. From the wilderness of sin and self to a land that is filled with promise because it comes under the rule of the King.

Matthew 7:11

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Therefore if we are like a “yo-yo” in seeking God, we can and should pray that the Lord makes us more hungry for Him, so we become more consistent. He will allow difficulty to arise to humble us and cause us to see our need for Him, which is a good thing. We all have our own time, and each issue (struggle) takes its own time to resolve. Our Heavenly Father mirrors the father in the parable of the prodigal He is patient. We do not know how long the prodigal was in the world, but when he came back, he was loved as if he never left. Please note there is not one word of condemnation or “finally you see your error,” nothing. The story is of a Father hugging his returned son and loving him. It is beautiful, especially for what was NOT SAID, and how the Father interceded for his son, explaining to his oldest son the reasons for his actions.

Luke 15:30-32

But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'”

So if you have wandered and are embarrassed or ashamed to return to Him know, that that is of the Devil who wishes nothing more than to keep you in a place of guilt and shame, but this is not of your Heavenly Father as you can read.

Now back to Romans, “According to His purpose?” There must be a conscious effort of less of me and more of Him in my life. By knowing His purpose to use all things ( blessings and struggles) for our sanctification (less of me and more of Him), we can join Him in the process. By yielding, seeking, and trusting Him, we can move ahead instead of fighting Him. For often, without knowing it, we live in opposition to His purpose. Some of us have issues with obedience, “my way first then maybe I’ll consider God’s way.” That’s a great way to kill or limit any blessing God would have for you. We become like the lamb that wanders from the fold and strays into dangerous territory, so much so that the Shepherd has to leave the 99 to save the one. It’s dangerous and foolish to insist on my own way when the Lord has designed us with the capacity to know Him, to know His peace, love, and joy; why would we fight that? No other creation has been given this great privilege. Let’s not be stubborn and foolish and insist on our own way. Pride needs to die.

Proverbs 18:2

A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself (focus on my wants).

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 4:5-7

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Hence the greatest security is found in the wisdom that God gives.

Matthew 7:24-27

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house (your life); and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock (Christ). And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

By this simple story, we understand the folly of building our house (our life) on anything other than Christ. The ultimate end of a life that fails to follow Christ is an utter ruin, a destruction of a life that is so beyond our imagination. Conversely, the life that follows and obeys, suffering and enduring the consequences that come with a life of faith, will be blessed beyond what can be imagined- a life rich in the abundance that the Lord has stored up for his kids. To steal a phrase, “a land (life) filled with milk and honey.”

The promised land is equivalent to a life filled with the Holy Spirit. As Peter said, “silver and gold I have not but such as I have I give onto you . In the name of Jesus Christ rise up and walk ( Acts 3:6)”.

It takes time to manifest the Spirit as such, and we must pass through many hard and difficult trials to free us from our flesh and our pride, so we can “steward” well ( Matt. 25:14-30) life in harmony with the Holy Spirit where His manifest presence and gifts are seen in and through our life.

For the promised land to become a blessing to the people of Israel and not a curse, much of the fulfillment rested on Joshua’s shoulders, a man of great courage, conviction, and faithfulness. His legacy of obedience to the Lord is hard to beat, and the same is true now. For the Spirit-filled life to be all that Christ intends it to be for us much is reliant upon our obedience, “Seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be open, ask and it shall be given unto you,( Matt.6:33).” What is it that we are seeking, what is it that we are knocking to have open, and what are we asking for? What do the scriptures say? Before I quote the scripture, think of this. If you gave a nice thing to your child and that good thing got in the way of your relationship would you regret giving it? If you knew beforehand that they were not mature enough to handle the blessing, putting it before your relationship, would you give it? Of course not. So do we experience unanswered prayers because we seek to spend it on ourselves, placing it before our Heavenly Father?

James 4:3

You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Contrast that with Christ words, “Matthew 6:32-33

For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and Your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and ALL these things will be added to you.

We seek “things” because, in them, we believe we will find fulfillment and happiness. Yet without a life that seeks God’s Godliness, which is God’s way of protecting us from ourselves, helping us find true life and joy, “seeking all these things” trap us. How does a life of Godliness begin? What would you say to a new believer? The answer is as old and as tried and proven as the stories in the Old Testament. I am continually using these scriptures to bring to our awareness our need to read and meditating upon the scriptures. Without them being not just read, but ingested we will struggle needlessly. So through the frequent study of God’s Word, we line our lives up with the Lord. That way, He is able to bless us, and we can experience victory in this life. Monetary provision is only one of many of God’s blessings. To have Christ, I have more than enough. And this journey begins…

Joshua 1:8-9

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make — thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I COMMANDED thee? Be strong and of good courage. Be not fearful or dismayed, for the Lord your God goes before you.

IN ALL OF LIFE HE GOES BEFORE US, DO WE LIVE AS SUCH?

What God commands for one, He commands for all. What was true for Joshua to lead successfully is also true for me and you to live successfully. As believers, we are to conquer our sinful nature as well as be a light and an example to others. Said in another way, people who see us and get to know us, our life should be their personal invitation to know Christ.

2 Corinthians 2:14-15

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,

If we would but commit to obedience, we would understand and experience the joy and the assurance of a life of the Spirit. A life of abundance. A life of peace, joy, provision, faith, etc. Staying connected to the Source of Life has more true abundance than the wealthiest of people. Just imagine God as your bank; you need joy, seek Him; his touch brings all the joy we need. You need strength; He’s the master of strengthening the inner man, follow His commands given to Joshua, or read Psalm 1. If we need wisdom, read Proverbs and pray for wisdom and then live according to His principles, etc. If we need finances, pray and be a good steward of what He has given you and tithe, “for He knows your needs,” and test God read Malachi 3: 6-11.

I liken therefore seeking the “Kingdom First” to an arrow directed to the bull’s eye of growing in Christ. Though there be wind and turbulence, however because of the arrow’s design (our faith), it will pass through the resistance. Therefore if you are the stronger believer in your family, continue to seek the Lord, for you are the tip of the arrow. Your family will follow though they may not be following right now, but by your example and prayers, they are being set apart and will, in time, follow. Be confident that your example and the expression of Christ through you will woo them over to Him.

1 Corinthians 7:14

For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise, your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

1 John 1:3-4

that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ ( this is were our strength comes from). And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

This ultimately is what the Lord wants for all of us, a communing spirit with His Holy Spirit where at a whisper, we hear, we obey, and are blessed. Blessed because we are giving access to the Spirit to mold us, change us, forgive us, and mature us into a life of faith, courage, and confidence. If perilous times come, we will be ready. Otherwise, the surprise and lack of preparedness will be on us, and what kind of foolish decisions will we make because of our lack?

The circumstances of this life, regardless of what they are, will be unable to thwart us if we see that Jesus is the Rock we run to. Just like David didn’t see Goliath’s size, instead, he saw the size of his God. We need to have the same vision and see that no matter the giant we face that our Father is always bigger. Now let’s get back to our story from our last Vida and see how Hezekiah handled this Goliath type problem.

2 Chronicles 20:20 -23

And they rose early in the morning and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets ( which represent His Word, which we now have in print) so shall ye prosper.

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of ( HIS) holiness, as they went out BEFORE the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever ( take note: this praise was a step of faith, before anything had occurred. However, it was based on the prophecy that was given, God’s Word spoken. There is power in the declared Word of God when joined with the faith of His people).

And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy another.

By faith, I praise Him, acknowledging that regardless of how the situation looks right now, He is still in charge, and victory will be had. Regardless of how bad the diagnosis is, or how many bills I can’t afford to pay, none of these things moves God. He is not at all worried about it. He’s not thinking; boy Arthur got himself into a real mess this time; I’m not sure I can help him. No, faith-based praise says just the opposite, my God is Greater Still. Faith acknowledges the problem but doesn’t see the problem with carnal eyes. How many examples do we have of potential tragedy in the scriptures?

Trapped at the Red Sea, Pharaoh’s army closing in, who would have thought that God would part the waters? Quail out of nowhere to feed millions of people who were complaining. Water from a rock, no less in the middle of a desert again for people who were complaining. And then Peter who says “silver and gold have I none, but such as I have I give I unto you, in the name of Jesus Christ get up and walk” and the lame man jumped up and praised the Lord! To walk in harmony with the Holy Spirit invites the best life one can have on this side of Heaven; there is no richer life!

This also is how the Jerichos in our life crumble. Do we not know that God humbles us to test our hearts? To reveal to us our need for change. Never to shame or condemn but to show us what He already knows about us and to give us the opportunity to repent and seek change. Will we complain or trust in Him? My faith is being refined as I cry out to a God who seeks my passionate attention.

Also, there is another great example from Hezekiah when facing the threat of Assyria.

2 Kings 19:14-19 Hezekiah’s Prayer

Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD. And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said: “O LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. So now, O LORD our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, are God alone.”

2 Kings 19:35

And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

Hezekiah doesn’t ignore the truth that Assyria has been victorious, but he acknowledges why. The gods of the other nations were not gods but the works of man’s hands. Therefore if we get a bad diagnosis, or lose our job, or experience what seems like a tragedy, don’t ignore it, acknowledge it, but ALSO acknowledge that Our God is Still Bigger, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and able to save.

As the Refiner’s work is having its way in me surrender bleeds out my old ways. I start learning to drink from the well that never runs dry….the water of the Word and of the Spirit, and my confidence grows. My inner strength grows as more of me is beginning to rest and trust in all of Him. If you note in scripture that God shows up in crisis. Think of every great miracle in the Old Testament or New; it’s in the context of a crisis. God has to show up, or we are done. Do not let suffering or hardship intimate you, but also do not let it get wasted on you. Let it drive you into the Word Of Grace and find the comfort and assurance that only Christ in a crisis can provide. It forces us to get real with Him.

Jesus once asked the disciples who do people say that I am, and then He made it personal, who do you say that I am? If I was to ask you, what would you say? Would it match what the Lord says about Himself?

Exodus 34:5-7

“And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him ( Moses) there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.

And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD GOD, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty;”

Or what David said…

Psalms 86:2-6

Preserve my soul; for Thou Art Holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. Rejoice the soul of thy servant:

for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive;

and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

So how did you do? Did you describe the Lord as He did? Do we know the Lord like David knew the Lord? If not, do we want to? Are we willing to pay the price? So let’s be super clear here and not get into legalism. WE CANNOT CHANGE OUR HEART, NO MORE THAN WE CAN DO HEART SURGERY ON OURSELVES, BUT WHAT WE CAN DO is show up for class, listen, and be taught. Every day that we miss time in the scriptures, we miss a day that the Teacher could have brought us closer to Him. Our job is to POSITION ourselves for His workings in our life. Just like a heart surgeon cannot help us if we do not show up, so by avoiding time with the Lord, little to nothing is changed in us.

In conclusion, if you struggle with knowing how to pray, praying the Psalms to the Lord is a great way to kick start your prayer life. This Psalm is one of many that can be read back to the Lord as a prayer.

Psalms 86: 7-11

Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.

In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee ( in the future), O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.

For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name (this should be our daily praise and prayer).

Father,

Thank you for your greatness and loving-kindness. Help us to press into You more, give us eyes that truly see. Thank you for this teaching.

Amen and Amen

Go in the Hope that His Grace provides,

Arthur
